While in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park this past may. I came across this heron hunting for fish in the river near the Institute at Tremont. I got set up and in position just as it caught this fish for dinner.

Nikon D300 w/500mm f/4
1/250sec. f/4 ISO 800
Tripod with Kirk King Cobra Action Head

Thanks for Looking

Neat seeing this heron in a running stream like this; that's not something I'm used to seeing. Your position here is very good, showing the heron to advantage and giving us a good look at the setting as well.

The heron appears rather pale from the thousands of these birds I've probably seen around the country in 40 years of birding.

Excellent image Joel, I like the water with the relatively slow shutter speed and the fish tops it off, nice work. :toast:

neat shot, Joel, I like the water and the pose with prey. I agree with Rich, that the bird's body looks surprisingly pale and silvery to me compared to what I'm used to, but the head looks normal, so I think it's natural and not a brightness or color issue.

That's a very nice photo of a very strange-looking Great Blue Heron.

Well captured Joel. I especially like the setting. I too am surprised by the silvery coloration of much of the plumage - an unusual heron.
