High Lake

High Lake in the Selway-Bitteroot Wilderness, MT. Taken last weekend on a backpacking trip that involved a grueling hike up to this beautiful high alpine lake. Because of the very steep terrain, and trail largely obscured by snow, I'm sure we were the first group up there this year. After an afternoon of drizzly, overcast weather and stormy skies to the east, the skies to the west started clearing around sunset to reward us with this amazing alpenglow on the surrounding peaks.

Canon 5DMII. 16-35/2.8 @ 16 mm. ISO 100. f/19. Simple 2 exposure blend. C&C appreciated. See LARGER VERSION for best detail.

Love this photo Doug. I particularly like the way the reflection of the mountain in between the ice looks like it's on fire. Great shot.

Beautiful light. The reflection I think really makes the image. I love the detail visible in the larger image.

Lovely light and the composition works well in pulling the eye right around the image. Tristan

Beautiful shot . . . the foregound works well enough, and the warm light on the peaks is very pleasant. The sky feels a bit dark to me and, if it were mine, I might play with brightening it a bit more. It sure is dramatic though.

Thanks folks. Phil, the sky is just the wayit looked and its exposure compared to the peaks was not altered - as mentioned the conditions were unusual, with stormy sky to the east and the sun breaking through to the west

Doug,

Another beautiful alpine landscape with gorgeous light. The reflection is a nice touch and I'd say looks like some additional great opportunities - if you could somehow navigate the logs without falling in... But those logs sure do work for a nice framing and foreground element.

I love those dark, stormy skies like this and agree that these conditions can and do produce darker skies to the east when it opens up to the west. You were well rewarded on this trip for sure.

Pretty scene, Doug, some great alpenglow! Nice natural looking exposure too. The fg is a bit busy for me, bu ti imagine you werent anxious to walk out on those logs to get closer to the ice

The beauty of this image really comes out in the larger image. Must have been a great spot to enjoy the sunset from the looks of this image. Nice work!

The only thing I'm not crazy about is the untidy logjam, but WOW! everything is excellent Doug!

The unusual combination of the warm light and grey-blue sky is very eye-catching. I agree with others, though, that the reflection really makes the shot!
