I made this image at about 1:00AM on a bluff overlooking the Canning River as it emerges from the Brooks Range in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The quality of the light in the very early morning hours was often astounding.

Nikon D700
Nikor 17-35 AFS f/2.8 at 17mm
RAW processed in LR3 and CS5

Talk about sweet light! Excellent comp with the bend in the river and the diagonal lines from the clouds both bringing the eye to those peaks.

Like the others said, this is some amazing light on display. The composition serves it well by showing the wide sweep of the land covered by that sweet light. And wow, 1 AM! I can't even wrap my brain around the fact that this scene = 1 AM. This is just beautiful.

Quick tip: you've got at least one dust bunny near the middle-left edge, just above the sunlit hills (more visible in the large view). Wouldn't have even noticed if your great composition wasn't drawing my eyes all over the frame

What a view, and beautiful light! I love the sweep in the river and the clouds pointing towards the distant hills.

This may be one of your best images, IMO, Steve. Grand scene, lovely colors, wonderful balance of light. No nits from me. I'm just wondering if that hazy horizontal cloud in the upper part of the sky might be the remnants of a jet contrail.

gorgeous light, Steve. Cropping down the sky a bit to a pano improves the comp for me, by getting the horizon out of the middle

I didnt know you had been up there--you lucky guy! This is just sweet--i dunno about it being in your best, but its darn pretty. I might crop some sky and go a bit wider, it suits this vista. :wavey:

Beautiful light and I like the feel of the wide open spaces. Man, 1am!!! That does not allow for a whole lot of sleep with light like that all night long.

I really like this a lot Steve and even more now that I know it is Alaska. Your composition has just enough elements and the right spacing to keep my attention and the colors and deep views are very pleasing. If it were mine, I'd be tempted to skim just a little off the top and frame the edges of the image with the clouds. Looks like an awesome place and I am surprised by the lack of snow.

Steve,
That's a super shot with great exposure. Ditto on all that's been said before that's positive about the shot.

Is there any chance the shot is rotated clockwise just a tad? There's no specific horizontal horizon, so it may just be my eye looking at it. It's mostly the edge that appears below the two peaks & just above the stream.

Hey Steve

Classic - what a viewpoint, eh?

Great shot, you did really well with the blending, etc. Beautiful shot, and a great trip, man.

Cheers
