Saltmarsh Pink
by Luke Ormand
Another shot of the same plant... I did some shooting of this species today at a different location but it does not lend itself to photography as the flower grows amongst much taller grasses which makes isolation difficult. This photo (and the previous shot) were made easy as they are along a mowed pathway.
As I previously stated, this is a new population that I found at a County Park (unbeknownst to the county or state). After reporting it to the state, they informed me this is only the 9th known location of this flower in NY State (I also found the 8th population). Both of these locations that I discovered are on public land are are quite accessible. In fact, the park I found this particular flower in is home to a host of rare and endangered wetlands plants in New York State which goes to show that you must keep your eyes open and take state survey data with a grain of salt - there are simply not enough men and women to survey the whole state. Hopefully I'll keep finding "new" populations and it can make its way off the threatened list.
