Dunottar Sunrise

Dunottar Castle, Stonehaven, Scotland.

This is probably my favourite shot I have taken of Dunottar castle and as usual it is all down to the quality of some extremely transient blood red light that flickered over the castle shortly after sunrise. At the time I was with some Russian friends and having achieved a few shots of sunrise behind the castle I ran back the other side and gulping down oxygen set up on the other side of it. Purple flowers made a nice foreground fringe for the grass banks then the delicate pink sky with violet clouds and lastly that sumptuous light. Just heavenly..

Ian, I had the good fortune of visiting Dunottar on vacation about 20 yrs ago. The light was dull and overcast, I was just starting to get serious about photography, and my images --well nothing to brag about. Ever since I have been interested in looking at new images made here and IMHO I think this is the best shot of this castle I have ever seen.

Sweet! Doesnt get any better than that...well, actually i think if you lightly dodge some of the lit areas on the hillside there it would be a tiny bit better

Wow, absolutely gorgeous, Ian. How did you get this much dynamic range with velvia? Did you open the shadows up in post processing? Great composition and timing. :toast:

Hi Mark

No actually it is all present in the original slide actually it is considerably better than the scan. The mirror on my 9000ED is a little bit dirty and I will be cleaning it on Wednesday and then probably run a comparison scan. I might post it after for reference if the deterioation is marked.

Although the wonderful colors dominate, I am also impressed with the textures and
lines, particularly the diagonal lines in the FG. This image is strong in the FG,
middle and background. Congratulations, Ian.

An amazing capture with exquisite colors and detail. I like how you got up high enough to put the horizon above everything except the one tower which breaks it nicely. It just doesn't get any better than this in M&N, Ian! :toast: :toast:

Ian, I have been a fan of your work for a while now. I love this image. Your images often imply Tolkien like fantasy. My head is running away with all of the battles and adventures that must have taken place here. Fantastic work!
