Northern Harrier

I got eleven sharp shots from this male harriers fly-by and some of them had what I thought were better wing positions than this but they didn't have direct eye contact.

When I posted a different image of this bird back in January there was some discussion of whether or not I had selectively brightened or added saturation to the eyes. I didn't, in either image. I do wish I hadn't had to crop so much (didn't use the TC) but with this background and wing position this is the best compromise I could come up with.

7D, 1/2000, f/8, ISO 500, 500 f/4, shot from pickup window on 1/10/10, reduced overall exposure in ACR, cropped to 40% of original image, sharpened bird, no additional processing or adjustments, natural light, not baited

The eye contact is exactly what makes this shot too Ron. What a great look at this NH. I like the BG as well as it makes the bird pop. It stood up nicely to the big crop. Great post!

Great eye contact Ron, and the BG works real well here in setting a good contrast to the bird. :toast:

Really nice detail here Ron. Actually I like the wing position in this shot. It is different and has the reach out and grab you aspect to it. The eyes are super and the BG is complimentary. Well done.

The 7D + 500mm combo provides a sharp image, even when cropping away many pixels (my D300s only has 12.3 MPs compared to the 18 of your 7D. I really love that eye contact, and the phrag makes a surprisingly nice BG for this grey ghost.

A killer shot, the head turn / eye contact really makes this one stand out.

Funny, its pose looks almost casual as it glides along. The eye contact is great.

Excellent image Ron - I especially like the eye contacte, that the bird is at your level, and the sense of depth the bird has in relation to the reed bed.

Awesome eye contact Ron. I agree it is not that the best wing position that you have posted, but the look at that head turn and those eyes makes up for it. Super image.

You really have these Harriers figured out Ron. Another beauty. I am in awe over your ability to hit the focus on these in-flight shots.

The thumbnail doesn't do this justice Ron! This is really cool. A pity about the heavy crop, but the detail on the larger version still looks excellent. :toast:

Stunning Ron. I don't get a chance to see very many males let alone have the chance to shoot one of them and get a near perfect image like this. Inclusion of habitat and the head turn/eye contact is what puts this over the top. Incredible Ron.

I somehow missed this, but glad that I scrolled through the thumbnails again. I like this a lot - actually, since they are so scarce here, any shot of the male is good!
