Taken this afternoon near my home. Still waiting for the winter birds to appear. These guys will have to do me in the meantime.

Nikon D300; Sigma 500/4.5; f6.3@1/320th; ISO 500; HH: cropped to vertical.

All comments and suggestions most welcome!

Tom: Beautiful detail (especially evident in the larger version). Great perch and background. The composition feels cramped to me at the top with the bird, and a little too much perch at the bottom. I wonder if a horizontal crop would work? If you have it, a little more room behind the tail. Well worth the effort on this fine capture.

Beautifully captured. What about a square crop?

I didn't know a Black-Capped Chickadee could look so good. I like everything, no nits. :toast:

Nice capture Tom, I like the pose, the background and the mossy perch, but my initial reaction when I first saw it was too much perch and I agree with Keith and Phil that a horizontal or square crop might look better. However I think you'll probably agree that cropping and compostion is many times just a matter of personal taste and you should do it the way You like it.

Well done techs, Tom. The perch is interesting. I like it a lot, but you've had some good crop suggestions. Great image, though.

sweet, Tom. great perch, nice bg, and a nice alert pose. I like the idea about a horizontal crop: maybe come up to the bottom of the very lichen-y part of the perch, then add a little on the left and a little more on the right. :toast:

Thanks for the crop suggestions and the encouraging comments.

Here is the shot with an 8 x 10 horizontal perspective. The original crop I submitted was done to accompany another shot I have with the same vertical crop.

Hi Tom: I like the horizontal crop. Seems to balance better for me. Nice!

I was going to suggest a horizontal crop, but I see that you've done that. Great shot! I really like the cropped version.

Beautiful capture, the larger version is outstanding. I'm curious about the vert. crop, he looks a bit crowded on the left and while the vert perch probably drove the vert. crop I would love to see this cropped horizontally.

Tom,

I would have suggested a horizontal comp if I hadn't scrolled through the comments and seen that you reposted a horizontal. I prefer the horizontal by far, it has a nice balanced feel to it and there is enough room all around. Beautiful natural colors, details, pose and light in the eye. The mosses on the perch are wonderful. Thanks so much for posting the larger version, it helps to appreciate the details all that much more.

Wonderful image Tom. Love the BG pose and perch.
A bit more room to the left would improve.
