OK -- I'll be happy to kick off this new gallery!

Looking SouthWest across the tide flats at Valdez.

In the midst of a long spell of basically dreary, wet weather the clouds broke up for just a bit and let some of the sunlight through. On top of that, it just happened to be during the sunset hour. It was still raining overhead (as can be seen by the rain drop splashes in the water)but the lighting sure was nice.

Unfortunately, as in most direct sunset shots, the mountains and other background would have been essentially black if I exposed for the sunset so I got out the tripod and took 2 sets of 4 progressive exposures which I blended to make 2 frames for a stitched panorama. The result is a much better representation of the real event.

The large version has a whole lot more presence so be sure and take a peek!

Gary,
Keep it going.
For all the photographic wonders in your state I don't see much activity.
I live in Kansas but have been to AK 10 times since 1993.
The Central States group is very active with their photos.
As a visitor, I'll attach one from the Matthews River on the south slope of the Brooks Range from last August.

Very nice photo, Larry! You captured that light nicely and I'm always a big fan of foggy or cloudy shots. Keep on posting those Alaska photos but remember that this is a true gallery now and you can post them as a standalone entry rather than in the comments as you would in the forum.

Love this one, Gary. It has a lot of the elements that I think give "drama" to a photograph. The dramatic orange sky, obviously. But more subtle (and you are right, you see some of this better in the larger image) additions are the ground fog in the middle left of the image and the reflection of colors off the flats. The ice/snow adds a nice texture.

Nice. Yeah, that wet weather was something else..... I'm a sucker for reflections, and this is a unique one, with the water and ice. I'm still trying to figure out exactly where this was taken from. Over on the terminal side, I guess. It has always seemed to me that you couldn't get a sunset shot in Valdez, because the mountains are so high, but this is really nice. Love that FG, and you did a great job on blending the exposures, too. A REALLY good job.

Thanks, Genny. This was taken just off the side of the road, right before you get to town (New Town that is). I was essentially set up on the edge of the tide flats during a fairly high tide.

Great shot, Gary. Great color and I agree the larger version gives much better appreciation. T

By the way, thanks for pointing me to the site here. I'm going to have to resize some images to meet the posting requirements here. Then I'll try to help keep the AK gallery active.
