#458 - Lightly Dusted

I took this shot because of the monochromatic nature plus I liked the detail and textures of the millions of branches (both spruce trees and brush) against the fresh white snow of the night before.

Sony DSC-R1, ISO-160, f8.0, 1/125, hand held.

Beautiful monochromatic shot, Gary. Winter is coming here too.

I, as well, like all the detail and texture - well seen! It shows particularly well on the larger photo. I'd be tempted to lighten the image a bit to make the snow a bit more white (assuming it is not my uncalibrated monitor here at work making it dark).

Joe; Here is a slightly brighter version. You raised a good point about the brightness. I keep forgetting that I normally work in a room with low lighting and with a fairly dark gray background on the screen. What looks bright under those conditions turns out fairly subdued when posted against the bright white background of this site. It's too bad NPN doesn't use a gray background. Everyone's photos would tend to look much brighter and more colorful.

Thanks, Stan. I didn't touch the saturation at all. This is full color. The only thing I really did with it was bump the lower part of the luminance curve a bit to bring out some detail in the shadows and adjusted the brightness. I did shoot a b&w version (with the camera set to b&w) and it isn't very different from this one.

For those who are curious, here is the version shot with the camera set on b&w.

Wow--interesting, the low light i guess really did the trick here, a very subtle difference!

A wall hanger Gary!! Perfect comp with the rock placement and the trees moving off into the top left.
