Pyramid Mountain B&W

One final B&W from my Canadian Rockies trip earlier this month. I went to shoot the famous sunrise light on Pyramid Mountain but the clouds behind me didn’t cooperate. Still, the sky above the mountain was nice and I shot this about ½ hour after sunrise.

C&C appreciated.

I really like this composition, very simple, just emphasizes big trees, big mountains and big sky. Just plain grand! However, the B&W conversion here isn't doing it for me. The snow on the mountains seems way too middle gray, and the sky does not seem dark enough. I think a good ol' red filter B&W conversion on the original would do the trick. It also seems to be lacking contrast, mainly I would like to see more dark tones. I think this scene totally rocks, and a little better treatment would definitely push this over the top!

I agree with Jake that this is a grand image, and b&w was a good choice.
I disagree with him in regard to contrast. There is plenty of tonal variety here. I reckon the skies could be a touch darker to give more definition to the mountain. My only nit is that it appears to be slightly oversharpened. Easily fixed, though.
Oh, yeah...I like the cool toning you chose, too.

Barry,

Excellent mountain landscape. I love it when there's a fresh dusting of snow on the mountains, and the b&w here does very well to show that off. Processing looks pretty good to me although I might agree this could use a tad more contrast - mostly in the sky. No nits really, this is quite a grand mountain landscape.

What a grand scene. I like the size comparison between the mountain and the trees. Sky actually looks a bit uneven, though I realize that might be the clouds.

A very nice b/w, Barry. I like the light hitting the mountain side and the soft sky. I agree the snow could be whiter, and a darker sky would compliment the darker fg nicely and make the mountains pop out a bit more. Nonetheless, this is a lovely scene well captured.

wonderful scene, Barry and the simple comp emphasizes the grand mountain. I think it's a very good BW conversion, though agree with whitening the snow, and agree it looks slightly oversharpened
