The Mirror Effect

Well everyone, after 7 amazing days in one of the most beautiful places in Canada, I woke up to a cold and crystal clear morning. And it was fitting to get this shot on my final day prior to heading to the next destination on my journey  This shot was taken on the edge of Lake Magog. After 2 snow storms while I was there, I was lucky that the mountains had a fresh layer of snow on them. Mid September was the perfect time to visit the park because the lake was still open  Comments welcome

I have added the larger image for your viewing.

A stunning image, James. The atmosphere is so crystal clear, and those magenta tones are just beautiful. The light hitting the peak is a wonderful focal point. I initially thought a slight crop off the sky would be nice, but I really like the transition up to the deeper sky tones, so I'd probably leave it. Beautiful work!

This one is really sweet, James. I love how the light is hitting Assiniboine but nothing else. The clear sky actually works pretty well here.

Beautiful, crisp scene. Love the light on the distant peak and the foreground rocks are also nice. I feel like there's more interest on the left side of the image than the right, but that's minor.

Beautiful image!
The colors are very striking.
I personally would allow the entire large rock at the bottom; being cut off bugs me a bit. :toast:

Hi Sandy, There is a small bit of cropping on the left & right to help balance the image. Unfortunately I have no room on the bottom of the image. I guess I could have captured less sky and more foreground. Thanks for the comments

Beautiful image. The soft pastels in this really make the mood even more peaceful. Can't imagine how calm it must have been for you to be there and capture this. Big Congrats on a stunner

This is gorgeous! As elegasnt and beautiful as anything I've seen from there before. I understand this is about a 20 mile hike to get into? I don't know for sure if the gradient in the sky is a bit too strong. It does have a nice dramatic effect, so maybe not. Bringing up a little probably wouldn't either though. Nice!!!

Gorgeous scene, and your 'development' is perfect. Love the kiss of sunlight on the peak!
My only suggestion would be to clean up a bit of the white stuff on the foreground rock and to 'lose' the bright pebble just below the peak's reflection.
Minor, minor stuff, really. This is an absolute pleasure to savor, James!

wonderful image, James. The rock at the bottom throws off the image somewhat, and draws too much attention IMO. Part of it is that it is cut off the bottom, but also, it seems to throw off the balance of the image, making it heavier compositionally on the left side. If it were more to the right and placed a bit higher in the frame, it would probably be fine. For this, I would crop above the rock for more of a pano, or to keep the 2:3, crop the bottom and right.

Beautiful shot, classic mountain photo! Extremely surprised that no one has yet mentioned the obvious problem with the grad--the classic case of too strong a grad, where the tops of the peaks are much brighter in the reflection than they are above (and the bottoms of the mountains are brighter than the top). But its relatively minor and should be an easy correction.

Pretty epic conditions! Overall super but couple of comp nits...rock on btm needs a bit of breathing room...and possibly stepping to the right once and panning back to the left to offset the btm rock and peak to create a bit more tension as they are a bit overlapping right now. Well played sir :)

Thanks everyone for the comments, they are all good!! I find this website very valuable!! I have only been at this for 2 years, and have loads to learn  But each time I go in the field, your comments help me pre-visualize the scene. I agree that this image is a bit heavy on the left, I also wish I had panned down just a bit to give the foreground more room, and cut out a tad of sky at the top  I will do a repost shortly ! Thanks again

As a reflection nut, I love this!!! Awesome place and shot! :toast: :toast: :toast:

Having said that, on my monitor the graduated luminance of the blue sky may be just a little heavy for my preference.

Thanks again for the input, I have applied most of your comments to this image. Some, are just not possible ! I adjusted the darker section of the sky to make it a bit brighter, while keeping the nice transition from light to dark. I also corrected the reflection brightness of the mountains to be more accurate (Thanks Stan  ). I also removed the bright pebble below the reflected peak, and the white sections of the large rock. I tried to crop the large rock out, but it caused the foreground to be quite "empty". I tried to covey the majestic and awe inspiring feeling I had standing at the base of this amazing cirque  I hope it does !

Wonderful work, love the reflection in the lake and the calmness of the water. That little tip of red is just the icing on the cake , it takes the image from beautiful to amazing.Image 2 works better ,toning down that little foreground rock made such a difference.

I think the work on the re-post, though subtle, was highly effective. With regards to the rock at the bottom, I wonder how people's responses to it might change if it had been wet instead of dry. Very nicely done all the same.

James, what a wonderful shot, I have really enjoyed your posts from this trip. When you make the effort to take the trail less traveled, you expose yourself to nature's grandeur in a way that most of us can only dream about - and then having the skill and patience to capture it in these incredible images - magic!

Thanks again everyone for the comments  Kent, just to clarify, all the rocks are under water along the shoreline, I wish the color was different on that big rock!

Randy, thank you for taking a look at all of my photo's from Mt Assiniboine. When I was on my 6 week "BIG" trip, Marc Adamus asked if I was going to Assiniboine, and said "it would be a travesty" if I did not, since I was going to be in the area!! So I have to thank him for pushing me in the right direction
