Morning at Twin Lakes

Yesterday morning at Twin Lakes, one of my favorite spots thanks to the great views of the Sawatch mountains--Mount Elbert, the highest point in CO, is in the bg here. Was hoping for some clouds, but at least the moon wasnt obscured. It was below zero and my Mkii was starting to lose consciousness when i took this shot!

Stan - I like the subtle FG shadows leading into the view. Looks like you still have detail in the moon, hard to tell with the smaller version. This wouldn't be near the trailhead to Missouri Basin, would it? Maybe I'm thinking of a a different Twin Lakes. Maybe my monitor, but I see a slight green/magenta in the sky transition and some slight haloing around the peaks/sky - possibly the compression? Looks like your sand dunes have turned to snow. :toast:

Not sure what your seeing--i dont see it on my monitor, the sky is lighter near the horizon but there's no haloes, and its in pure black and white so im not sure what you mean about green

Love it as a pano, the FG, I'm not so sure about. Also, on my monitor I see at least four or five dust spots to the right of the moon--oops, never mind, probably snow!! Very well done though!

Stan,

Yet another awesomely processed b&w. At first my thought was you had too much foreground, but that was just a momentary lapse as very quickly the details and shadows started to appear.... And I think the soft (light) foreground makes for successful combination with the high contrast of the snow-capped mountains, sky and moon. This is most excellente.

Now Stan, Stan, Stan..... I count at least a dozen specs of dust in the sky  I know, I know, you just worked this up quick so you could post it.... but I know you're proud of your work, so clone those puppies out!

The light brings out the shapes pretty well and work great in the composition but I thinks it's a little to subtle in the foreground.

I like the subtle lines of light across the foreground snow. Maybe rid the contrail on the right side.

Stan, I really like this as presented. It is stunning in its impact. A second image as a pano cropping some off the bottom would also work well depending on presentation needs.

Yeah, clouds would have been nice, but this is good too! I like the subtleness of the foreground actually. I think this would be wonderful in a print!

This is my favorite of the bunch, Stan. I really like the sunlit spot in the center as it really draws my eye. Nice job on the conversion.

There is something about thius photo Stan, the light is so beautiful and the composition is so good that I think it has some "magic", keep it, print it, it's great!

Excellent Stan. Ansel Adams bw-look here which I dig a lot. The light on the snow brings in a lot of life!

A very nice b/w conversion, Stan. I like the strong contrast of the soft lighting of the fg and the stronger light/shadow of the mountains. The fg is a little bare, but does create focus on the mountains and moon.

Excellent conversion. Did you use a Wratten #25? This is one of my favorite places, but not in winter! Just in the fall. I like the comp and light, but just wish the lower foreground teasing of light spilling across was a wee bit brighter.

Thanks folks! I just 'stumbled' on this scene but i knew that splatter of light on the drift was a good subject, glad it works for most of you--keeping the fg was an easy decision for me to suit the mood of cold and open-spaced (just checked the low temp that morning--it was at least -4 degrees F, if not lower) but i understand some of the reservations about it.

Sorry about the dust specks--i never 'spot' those darn things until its too late...

Doug--i know it looks like one, but that cloud actually is not a contrail--i watched it 'form' so i am 100% sure of that. In fact, the whole sky became filled with high clouds about an hour after the best light was gone (of course...)

Gino--i got a good chuckle from your Jim Hall reference. My first guitar teacher was a student of Pat Martino's, so i got a healthy dose of jazz early on
