Purple Haze

Really, what else could I title this shot? This is an ox-eye daisy from a trip to Banff N.P. last summer. I really don't know what the purple flowers are . . . I didn't pay much attention to them at the time. But they add nicely to the scene here. I did paint a little extra purple in a couple of spots to balance the shot.

I've been reluctant to post this shot for a long time. I like it personally, but anticipate that the DOF is just too shallow for this to work for most folks. So please, be candid in your comments and let me know if that's your sense or if it doesn't work for some other reason.

Canon 5D Mark II, Tamron 90mm for 1/250 at f/2.8 (ISO 400).

Phil:
The thing that strike immediately is the purple bg! The shallow DOF of the daisy works for me - the sharp center peeking through the petals is enough for the eyes to rest there. The white petals seem to radiate luminescences giving it an aura. Great mood.

Just beautiful, Love the colour contrast with the purple and that sharp hit of yellow. In my humble opinion it really is a stunning image! Beautiful work Phil !

Thanks for the feedback so far! Charlie, the yellow is just the center of the flower. You can see what I mean if you click on my Gallery link and go down to my "Sawback No. 1" shot about halfway down the page.

Just a tiny bit in focus to draw the eye, and an explosion of purple - beautiful!

Phil: I had to look close to tell that the yellow was the flower center and once I figured that out the image fell into place for me nicely. Fine concept superbly executed.>=))>

Lovely, strong presentation, Phil, beautifully coloured and composed. The dof is just superb - the simplicity of the whole image capturing perfectly the delicacy of the flower.

I think this is a great shallow shot, Phil ! That you have a tiny area of crisp focus on just the right thing-- the bits of yellow and a thin slice of the base of the flower-- is the key that puts this over the top for this type of shot. The purple bg is a great contrast to flower.

I like it for the most part Phil. The colors are amazing, and I like the shallowness. I am wondering if having the POF on a different point would have made the shot a bit more evident on what is in focus and would have made the shot slightly more effective.

Phil, I'm a 2.8 fan, and that's all there is to it. I really enjoy this image because it shows the softness and whispiness of most flowers (especially wildflowers). The purple haze sets it off well and adds to the calm effect of this presentation.

Phil,

I like this as posted. I think the only thing I might consider doing differently is cropping down from the top and putting more emphasis on the flower. Beautiful image. Fine concept and I would put it on my wall.

Terrific colors and nice space to let the flower breath in the comp. Excellent work.
