Off I-70

The second of my recent drum scans.

This was my first successful attempt at capturing a rainbow on large format film. I can count about 5 other times when the rainbow was amazing as I was getting the camera out of the bag, but had completely disappeared by the time the image was focused. On this occasion I was driving down to Moab and was on I-70 near Green River -- I was following this storm that was moving at almost freeway speeds. I stopped a couple times to try and capture the clouds (and some rainbows I saw) only to find the clouds blown away before I could even start the shot. Finally I got smart and sped ahead of the storm a few minutes - and then essentially slammed on my brakes and jumped out of the car. I set up the shot in record time for a large format camera (about 5 minutes) and took the shot just as the rainbow had started to fade - about 30 seconds later the rainbow was gone.

Not sure about the title - any suggestions?

See larger version -- Enjoy - all comments/suggestions/critiques appreciated.

It's always great fun chasing after rainbows, even if it has to be on an Interstate highway. I think this is a pleasing image depicting the intimidating and beautiful thunderstorms that area so often sees.

When photographing rainbows there is always less time than needed, so I must admit you did excellent work. Nice idea to go faster than storm, sometimes it is impossible, you had lot of luck that clouds and you were going the same directions

Larger version is better, great clouds features (mamma) and rains bands are clear visible.

A really wonderful sky, cloud cover, and of course the rainbow too. I know the area fairly well and there are some neat formations all along the I-70 near Green River, however, this minimal FG area really provides an excellent view of the main attraction here. That no doubt being the entire sky area. Very well done IMO, Andrew.

Wow - great sky and i like the emphasis on the sky compared to the fg - actually i wouldn't mind seeing a little less fg also - maybe a small crop from the bottom. Either way, its a great shot.

Turned out great, Andrew. While the rainbow is a nice focal point, the rest of the scene holds its own too. I like the idea of keeping I-70 in the title.

Gorgeous clouds with wonderful lines and movement. The rainbow adds just that extra element too really make this superb. Having missed many fleeting moments with LF, I congratulate you on your planning. Worked very well. Must make an incredible print.

Very impressive, has a nice 'open space' feel to it.
