It's a tough Life

I have just got back from Yellowstone which is one of those locations that I have always wanted to go too, especially during the winter months. It is not an easy place to work but when it does it is an amazing place. The conditions on the day I took this image were some of the hardest I have tried to photograph in, not just the temperature but the amount of snow that was building up in the lens hood. It was impossible to use Auto focus, so had to switch to manual. Good fun though.

Canon 1D MK4, 500mm Lens, F4, 1/200, ISO 400.

I can imagine it was hard to get a good focus. Doesn't he look like a happy camper?

Great job capturing the feel of the environment. Makes me wonder why they don't migrate more. I'd be headed for Arizona.

Talk about an image that tells a story, wonderful title and good work in getting this difficult shot, way to go.

Hi Danny,

I quite like this - and your caption definitely supports the image! The pose, lighting (or lack thereof!), depth-of-field all go together well to make this work. I have two INCREDIBLY MINOR nits - both of which are simply personal preference issues. First is just about the crop - to my eye there's just a tiny bit too much space up top (and I do mean a tiny bit). My other nit is something completely unavoidable and linked to what I LIKE about the image (the heavy snow) - in my perfect world I wish the out-of-focus snowflakes in front of the dark region just below and to the left of the chin weren't there and that this region was as clear as the most of the rest of the bison. But these are really tiny and picky things - overall this is a standout, iconic shot (which is, more or less, what we've come to expect from you!).

Cheers...

Brad

The body posture, creating an illusion as if all feet are planted together, makes for a pleasing shape for minimalist composition. Good work!

Gosh this left me wordless (almost). What i can say is that there is too much white and that that white is too white. I love the pentagon shape it draws. This must give the idea of what had to be the life in the glacial era.

This is a OVER THE TOP FANTASTIC shot ! The subtle difference in the quality of falling snow as compared to the snow on the bison, and then on the ground while at same time being so similar is remarkable.

Awesome shot Danny! Like Brad I think there's a tad too much room at the top but other than that this captures the mood of winter in Yellowstone better than just about anything I've seen. Makes me wish I could be there. :toast: :toast:
