1 yr old Bald Eagle

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

This was taken back in February of this year. This wild one year old Bald Eagle seemed to have no fear of human presence and would often land to perch within 15 feet of several photographers for a period of over a week. I hope that since that time the juvenile eagle has become a little more wary of people. This was taken on a day when winds were gusting to about 50 mph.

Nikon D200, tripod mounted, f10, 1/250, ISO 400, +0.3 EV comp, Nikkor 200-400mm VR with 1.4x TC at 280mm, natural light, full frame. There is a yearly carp kill in this area but this bird was not baited.

We often see adult Bald Eagles posted in the critique forum and less often the juveniles. I actually like seeing and photographing all the phases of eagle plumages thus I thought I would post this one. I like the blowing feathers and grasses, the muddy feet and beak, the early morning light and the great look at this young eagle's eye. While I would prefer a more natural perch I'm not about to pass up taking images of a wild bald eagle within about 25 feet perched on a weather worn post either.

As always I sincerely appreciate your comments and critiques on my images. Thank you for looking.

Mia I don't much mind the perch especially since it is weathered. I really like the wind blown grasses and the way he seems to be holding on so as not to blow off the post. great eye contact too.

very nice, Mia. I like the ruffled, leaning forward pose, the head turn and light in the eye, and the muddy feet. the post works fine for me, like Cheryl says, it is nice and weathered, and I like the grasses in the frame also. Your DOF worked very well here. Immature balds are very underrated in my book--nothing against the adults, but I love the variation in the plumage of the immatures.

What a gorgeous looking bird... love the mud on the bill and talons and the vegetation adds a lot even though it's so minor in the frame. Congrats on this shot!

This colouring is quite different than I have seen in other young baldies, so this image is a treat. The ones I've seen usually had much more mottling and greater contrast between dark and light feathers.
The ruffled pose and shere are excellent, the muddy beak and talons add a lot of interest - and the blowing grasses make it an A+ in my book.
Your usual excellent work! :toast:

I remember that you worked hard getting good light on this eagle Mia and it certainly paid off. Love the muddy feet, ruffled pose and the wind blown grasses and I sure enjoy the detail from this FF image. Really like the sky color too. Very well done.

I love the detail visible in this due to the full-frame presentation, perfect focus, and nice DOF f/10 provided. The wind made for a unique pose by this bird, which adds to the comp IMO. Very nice as usual Mia.

Hi Mia, I like the way the grasses are bending. This shows the wind for me. The larger image shows the detail your efforts to get an angle for good light achieved.

Very dynamic image, Mia. I can see the balancing act this eagle is going through sitting on its perch. The grass stalks in the bottom also add to the feeling. You got some great light on this and exposure techs are perfect. The mud on its beak and feet are a bonus. Thanks for sharing this! :toast:

Terrific! Very nice detail and good exposure. Natural color. I like the hint of grasses in front of the perch as well.

Lovely in every way Mia! I just saw one probably about a year older (I think), got some photos, but of course were out of range for my current setup to be post-worthy. Amazing you got this close as well, great.

I love the wind-blown look here, Mia. The perch looks fine to me: it's weathered and allows a full view of the bird. The bent vegetation is a nice touch also. This is my first view of a juvenile eagle. So, I'm glad that you posted it for that reason too....and what a beautiful view it is. :toast: :toast:

Mia don't think i would worry to much about the perch but i take your point it's a big bird for a small piece of wood, the bird looks great even down to it's muddy feet,it's a very good image.

I especially like the light Mia, gives it that 3D look - I can reach out and touch this juvenile
Excellent DOF & details, like that grassy bottom too.
Very well done :toast: :toast:
