Pair of Jacks

This is not a poker game -- it's two Jack-in-the-Pulpits together deep in the woods.

Since I found no Jacks in the site search, I thought this was worth posting, even though taken in a hurry on a family walk. I got down to its level and did not realize that the light was a bit harsh from above. Hopefully others will do better, but our Jacks (and most other wildflowers) are about gone. The scene looks practically all green, but that's the way I remember it.

Canon 40D, 17-85mm lens at 85mm, 1/125 sec, f/7.1, ISO 800, hand held, manual focus.

Comments and suggestions always appreciated.

Dave, I really like the comp on this one. You've framed them perfectly for my tastes on the diagonal. Understand the harsh light in the BG but if you're game you could do a double processing of the image: this plus a much darker one to take the BG dark and then blend the two to get the effect yoyu want. Would be a killer shot.

Solid shot of an interesting plant. The Jacks are nice and sharp, and I like the colors. The light areas in the BG are somewhat distracting. Would help if they could be darkened.

David,

I like the color, mood and composition. I would try to darken the brighter areas some and I like Bob's suggestion. HDR might also be interesting, if you have access to HDR software and if you shot this in RAW mode.

Really neat subject and a fine image as posted.

Wow..JITPs are out so soon out there. Very nice twin you have got here. If you intend to reprocess suggest toning down the highlights on the top petal of the JITP on the left.

Very nice picture composition. I'm not sure if it is a good advice, but I'l try to crop the top (to hide the leaf in top-right corner) or to extend a bit the top section. But I like it as it is. Nicely done Dave.

Very cool shot, Dave. I like it as is, and I also think it's an image that's definitely worth trying some or all of the suggestions. I think it has possibilities for great versatility.

You picked a nice pov for these two. The details and colors are great. I also find the leaf in the upper left a bit distracting. My suggestion is to burn it in (darken it). Then it won't attract so much attention.

Dave: Nice find of a flower that we don't see all that often. Messy BGs seem to be the norm when shooting these. I think you handled it pretty well. One way to tame the highlights on the top is to use a polarizer during the capture. Well seen and captured.>=))>

Really nice. Agree darkening the background would make the subjects pop.
