Singularity

Wind River Basin, Wyoming

It's hard to put into words an experience like this. It started out as a windy, stormy sunset. I worked out this foreground comp and waited. Briefly, the rain stopped, the wind stopped, and the sun emerged from the clouds on the horizon just before setting. Time stood still as the Singularity formed. After the sun disappeared, the moment was gone and the rain returned in force. Probably the single most awesome experience I have had out in the Wyoming badlands.

This is a 3 image manual dof blend. Recovered the bright sun a bit, saturation, dodging, contrast, and web sharpening. I'd be happy to share the original if anyone is interested in seeing it. This one is a bit more colorful...but not by much.

Thanks for any feedback. Further below is an edit due to suggestions.

Cheers!

Neat comp with similar lines in the foreground and sky.Impressive light and colot too. I might let the distant formations go a tad darker.

Very cool conditions, and I like the foreground stripes. Overall the contrast feels a bit flat, and I think some more would help breath more life in the image.

Some pretty insane conditions you got here Nicolaus! A very unique location is always intriguing, and I really like the lines and color in the FG. I love the swirling clouds above, I just wish there were more of them in the frame. Also, the distant hillsides look a little green to me.

Amazing scene Nicolaus. Superb composition and an epic sky. I agree with Floris about perhaps adding a bit more contrast.

Hahah...always with more contrast it seems...well here you go, but in the form of a curves adjustment. I suppose I usually look at the original too much in an attempt to keep it as close to real as possible. Compared to it this image is extremely contrasty already. Also, a very slight burn to the hillside has been made, thank you for the suggestions.

Jared, those hills are actually a little green, it's the type of soil that is in the area. As for more clouds, the color you see on the top was the extent orange. Further above me was nothing but the darker blue clouds. It broke up the composition so I went with this image..although I do have others, this is the most cohesive one. Nature gives me a special moment now and then, but it's never perfect...a bolt of lightning slicing down through the vortex looking section would have been more my taste...

Thanks for the critiques...I'd be curious to hear if this is any better.

Very neat terrain, and must have been awesome to witness this in person. I do like the repost better than the original.

A superb image from a place not often photographed. I have driven through these badlands many times, always wondering what kind of images they harbor and never having the time. Thank you for sharing this!

Strong comp Nicolaus, I like it a lot. Overall the re-post with increased contrast is my fav of the two. Makes me want to check this place out.

Very cool image Nicolaus. I prefer the repost to the original. The composition is excellent with the leading lines in the foreground. I also really like the color in the sky, particularly the area of blue.

I greatly prefer the repost to the original . . . it's interesting to see the diversity of opinions. Fabulous shot from a place I've rarely seen photographed. What wonderful conditions!

A unique and wonderful looking area. You made a fine composition here, Nicolaus.
I too much prefer the reworked version. Interesting that, isn't it?

Talk about serendipity! This is stunning, Nicolaus. Those diagonal lines are the perfect lead-in and you gotta love those dramatic clouds. :toast:

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah John, I would have never guessed. ;]

Seriously though, I'm starting to wonder if there is something wrong with my eyes. I was driving today on the interstate looking at everything around me in an attempt to gauge the contrast of the landscape. Everything seemed like it just might need a contrast boost or curve adjustment as it was all pretty flat.....

Too late now, but I want to mention that Jared was correct. I thought those hills were naturally a bit green but they are not. It was a result of too much over all contrast. Fixed it on the print version. Thanks for catching that man.
