Hoh Rainforest

by Vance Gese

Gallery: LandscapePosted May 18, 2011310 views31 comments
Made this image early one cold morning in mid April of this year at the Hoh Rainforest of Olympic NP. No leaves were present on any of the maples at the time, spring being a little delayed this year.
Would appreciate your thoughts, ideas, and comments.
4x5, 150mm, Velvia 100F, polarizer.

Large image attached.

Thanks

As much as I like Floris's photograph, this is by far the most awesome image I have seen come out of this place....this is crazy, chaotic, colorful, but it manages to capture so much of what I imagine this area to be like.

Totally amazing image Vance!

Pretty wild, Vance! Love the intense greenery here. I think you did a masterful job at pulling out just enough order - not too much (and so keeping it representative) - out of this wonderful forest. Great work!

Vance, Another superbly intimate forest scene. I think I like this post a little better then the last. Nice work as always.

That is some intense yellow and green, Vance! As you know pulling a composition out of chaos is a challenge at best but I think you did well. And of course the large format film only enhances the intricate details in a scene like this one. Makes me want to pull out my 4x5.

Love the energy and color in this. It's very busy, but so well-ordered that it doesn't seem so..Bravo! :toast:

Wow, more green hues than you can shake a crooked Hoh stick at!
I'd love to loupe the 4x5 on a light table, I bet it's amazing.

Sweet shot Vance. This portrays the magical nature of the place very nicely. I love the way the moss is just dripping from all the small branches.

Having been there, I do appreciate this. It is an accurate depiction of the area. You got lucky with the light! The two times I have been there, it was solid rain.

I especially like the composition, as busy as it is. Well seen!

Great control of chaos. The detail on 4 x 5 must be amazing. The comp is well thought out and really gives me a sense of the place.

Crazy colors as usual. The comp doesnt come together for me as my eye is left twitching from being so busy. Maybe if I stare at it like a 3d pic... ;)

Thanks everyone for the great comments. Really appreciate it. Maybe I need to turn down the 'sat-o-meter' a bit more than I did while working on this image.

You can turn down the saturation if you want but I think it's perfect as-is. This is a splendid forest scene Vance. Busy but in a real good way!

Another fine one Vance. I think the composition is a bit stronger here - if not then this one certainly is "easier" to grasp immediatly. Love this one.

A bit late, but I really like this one too, Vance Saturation is very subjective. This image handles it well. The comp is very good given the chaos one can find here as is the light. I like the way the moss almost glows.

WOW! This is really a coherant and clean composition. It still says the Hoh Rainforest in full force to me. The greens are just dripping off of everything here. I like it a lot!
