Moribana slant style

Flowers: Aranda orchid, gerbera, fatsia

Some of you would not find favour with the black fatsia partly covering the Gerbera but this is a 2D rendition of a 3D arrangement. The fatsia is about 3-4 inches forward of the Gerbera and does not look out of place in 3D.

Photographically, this is slightly different. I used a difuser over the LED lights and a black bg which makes the red and white pops. The lighting is less harsh than previous images and I am looking for feedback on the lighting. There is obviously more that can be done to improve the indoor lighting so suggestions are welcome.

Looking at this image on an uncalibrated laptop with brightness turn up, I am horrified to see the image really washed out and all the creases in the black background clearly seen. Is there a way to preview or make sure this is not shown or is this dependent on the browser and monitor settings? The same thing happened to me when I submitted some images to a local club for competition and the display when projected looks horribly wrong

Beautiful arrangement Gary. Excellently nested in the frame. The black BG fit very well to the overall image, Well done.!!

Strikingly beautiful, Gary ! I can see nothing problematic in the lighting or the bg - quite the reverse. The strength of the colours reminds me in a curious way, despite the ground colour, of Japanese porcelain.

The colors of the chosen flowers really compliment the arrangement, Gary. Particularly the two pink flowers framed by the red.
Colors and exposure look good on my monitor, no noticeable detail in the BG. Superb shot!

Well the diffuser works well along with the black BG to absorb some more of the light. Good progress. I'm glad of the explanation of the arrangement and the fatsia. When I first saw the thumb nail I said to myself what has Gary done here. Works really well. I like this arrangement very much. I'm looking at this image on my iPad right now and it looks good to me. I don't see any creases. There has been some discussion about IE9 and colour profiles and rendering. Are you using it??

Your best to date Gary. I particularly like the arrangement because it seems to have enough space in it and doesn't appear to be cluttered at all. The bowl works perfectly and this represents a huge improvement in the lighting and the bg. On my Safari browser on the Mac everything looks perfect.

My understanding is that all the main browsers (IE8, Firefox. Safari, Chrome) default to a gamma of 2.2 and use the SRGB color space. My best guess is that it's not the browser that's the problem but rather the display settings on the monitor. I don't actually know of anyway to adjust brightness in Firefox or Safari.

This is a beautiful arrangement and image. No nits.

I like the arrangement, lighting, and BG. Very nice. As you noted, the black fatsia covering the gerbera does detract from the image itself.

Gary: My first view of this is on my laptop and I can see the creases in the BG. However I'm not bothered by them at all although I know you don't want them there. I actually think they add interest . Now I have had similar issues when using a black BG or when shooting with deep shadows as the BG in the wild. There will often be some pixels that are not pure black and I often don't see them in the image unless I tilt the laptop screen and they show up. I've dealt with this in a couple of ways. But before I apply any remedy I run the cursor over the questionable parts of the image and observe the RGB values to see how black the area really is. I've included a screen shot of taking your image into PS. I did a color sample on a number of the light spots in the BG. As you can see there are some values at the selected spots. You can fix this by either going to the lightest spot and with either a curves or levels adjustment designating this as your black point or you could merely paint black over the offending areas. As for the image itself I agree with Pat that this is your best. Superbly crafted in concept, capture and presentation. >=))>

To a layman's eye it looks wonderful - the only issue has already been highlighted already (the Fatsia related). I have mixed feeling about that golden semi circle highlight on the vase - seems to draw my eye there a little bit.

Background looks fine on all my computers

Thanks everyone for your comments. I use Chrome as the browser on both windows and mac machine. On IE the color rendition is not as good. I am glad most of you did not find any problem viewing this image but I suspect most of you have calibrated monitors.

Bill:
Thanks for taking the trouble to analyse the image in PS and your suggestions to fix this problem. Will do this for the archival copy.

Take care.
