Hemlock Highlands

A typical scene in the mid elevations of Sikkim Himalaya. The peaks in the backdrop are in the 5500-6000m range. This was shot from a little clearing (a rarity) in a Himalayan hemlock grove (similar to the one seen silhouetted against the clouds). Its an amazing place to be and holds a fairly dense population of Himalayan black bears and red panda.
These are at times overlooked photographically due to the lure of the big peaks further up (Kangchenjunga massif can be seen after walking a few days up valley).

Would love to hear you thoughts !

very cool... like the silhouette of trees in the foreground. gives the scene a great sense of scale.

Anand,

The clouds and foreground give a nice sense of scale, here. One can tell that these peaks are big! I do think the large area in the foreground could use more detail. I wonder if a pano crop from the bottom would allow more emphasis of the peaks and the clouds.

Just a note for others viewing this image: In IE9, the sky has a visible cyan cast. I then opened this image in FireFox 5.0 and the sky color looks perfect.

Glad you like it Navin !

@ Preston, I under exposed the foreground (and increased contrast in processing) to get the tree ridge to stand out in the clouds and there is not a lot of detail there. Ill have your suggestion in mind next time i get a similar opportunity.

On the whole I like this image the way it is, but it is probably worth the effort to try some cloning to a pano.

Impressive peaks and I like your comp that adds depth and layering to the scene. My only thought is maybe to warm up the color balance a bit. Even though this isn't sunrise/sunset, a bit of warm light seems to add appeal.
