Austfonna ice cap

Well after such a warm welcome I thought I would post this. Shot very early in the morning, just as the sun began to rise, this is Austfonna, an ice cap located on Nordaustlandet in the Svalbard archipelago. If you spend more time, have a fixed location rather than a very small 1953 icebreaker, filters and long exposures I think the results could be spectacular.

Steve

And just for scale:
- 200km in circumference
- Thickness up to 560m, average thickness 235m
- The ice dome reaches an elevation of 783 meters above sea level
Thank God for the web

Subject: Austfonna ice cap, Svalbard
Location: Nordaustlandet, Svalbard
Camera: Canon MKIII
Lens: 70-200f/2.8 plus 1.4x - handheld
Exposure: 1/160s at f9 ISO400 +0.67 stop compensation
Crop: FF (original capture horizontal)

Spectacular lighting! I'm thinking about spending a semester in Svalbard, and if I could capture photos like this then I guess I oughtta just bite the bullet and go! Anyhow, I love the simple contrast between the blue and the gold. Truly striking!

The warm light on the blue ice looks great and brings out the textures well. Looks to be a slight halo along the horizon.

Nice warm/cool (very cool) contrast  Thanks for providing information on the scale of this. Massive hunk of ice. Probably melting fast now
