Autumn in Iowa+repost

I was visiting my family in Iowa this past week. No 5D2 or tripod along. Wasn't expecting to take pictures. Woke up one morning to fog. Don't hardly ever get that in here Arizona, but after seeing the fog images presented here, I was anxious to go out and take pictures.

My folks live near Ambrose Call State Park in Algona. I had hiked around here before, but was a bit intimidated by the chaos of trees in terms of isolating photographic compositions. I thought the fog and the fall color might help make things more manageable, so I headed out for a short hike.

Haven't printed this yet. Just quickly worked it up in ACR and PS. Your thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

Canon G9. Repost below.

Love the colors Tony. The term "be trix and and between" comes to mind for many reasons. Love the color and intersection of lines.

Now that's something different for you! I like how all the branches come in from different angles, and the mix of three colors is very engaging. Nicely seen!

Very nice atmosphere, and something we're not used to seeing from you Tony. I'd like to see how this scene looks in a vertical format.

Tony, the colors of the leaves together withe the cooler shades in the background really keep my attention. The trunks and branches make for a fine balanced composition to my eye. An exceptionally delicate capture of autumn atmosphere in my opinion.

I still get impressed when I see what that little G9 can do in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing. I really like the combination of cool blues in back of the warmer colors. I like the way the trunks form an "X" which really reduces the chaos factor quite a bit, and makes the scene very balanced. Quite enjoyable Tony.

Beautiful Tony :toast: love the composition and the colours. I know the chaos of which you speak, but you've tamed it here.

Nice! Chaotic, but balanced, and masterfully presented as always! I might go a bit more neutral on the blues, but that's personal preference. :wavey:

Tony, This is so nice!, and so well done. I love the mix of colors with the soft feel of the fog. Even though there is some choas in the scene you managed to give it a peaceful and calming feel for me. Excellent work with the G9 too.

I really like the composition and color combination Tony, you've managed to tame an otherwise chaotic scene. Nice work.

I think this works well, Tony. Scenes like this are very difficult to compose but I think you have succeeded with this shot. The color of the foreground leaves is complimented well by the subtle color of the ground foliage and leaves in the background. The mist really provides the needed separation between the foreground and background to make this work. Finally, the tree branches give you some strong diagonal lines to add further interest.

Well composed, Tony. Wonderful lines and the background is not too
noisy/busy, owing to the light fog.

Beautiful, Tony! I know how difficult it is to extract order from chaos, and you did an excellent job.

There looks to be a magenta cast in the blues, but I'll check when I get home to my calibrated monitor before I comment further.

This really works!

Tony, I really like the woven effect of the trunks and branches and how it's mimicked by the colors of the leaves.

A very delicate and beautiful scene, Tony. I love how the fog has created a softness that accentuates depth and provides separation between the elements. The geometric design offered by your composition is interesting in its own right, which makes this photograph enjoyable in more ways than one.

Tony, as daunting as the forest is, you did a wonderful job with this image, and hand held no less. There seems to be a bit too much magenta in the fog, but it could just be from all the red/brown leaves and the blue light from the fog.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. Here's a repost based on comments and an initial print. Pulled some blue out of the fog (thanks, Stan), took away just a touch of magenta from the background (thanks, Youssef and Preston) and really upped the saturation in the leaves (the print itself suggested this). Probably hard to see a difference, but it looks much better in the print with these changes.

The repost looks great--the leaves definitely pop more with the changes and they're the rightful star of the show.

Sorry I'm late to this party Tony, but glad I got to see this image and the repost. The design of this is complex enough to add interest but not over done so that it leaves us wondering, or should I say wandering. I'd say you caught the moment and crafted the image quite nicely.

Beautiful light and color, Tony. The more vibrant repost really pops. The soft, misty bg also helps make it pop (sorry, that's a lot of pop)

You did a marvelous job here Tony. I like the repost better. The clarity and crispness of the scene make it for me. My only suggestion would be to possibly pull a little contrast out of the very upper part of the main branch in the middle of the image where the black appears to be darker. That's just me trying to be helpful.

Great work!

Wonderful composition, I don't think many would be able to pull such a balanced, pretty image from that chaos. The colors are brilliant and even though the subject is so different from your norm, it has the TK feel.

Beautiful! Love the repost. I agree with Michael, if there's a way to lighten the darkest branches near the top I think it would keep my eyes in the frame better. :toast:

Hey Tony,
Even out of your element you still got that special eye. This is one of those scenes, unlike your detailed sandstone, that you let your eye wonder and just collectively absorb all the colors. Great work from you.
Glad you brought a camera along
