I came across this painted turtle while at Yankee Springs in west Michigan. I thought the angle was interesting and the color of the shell especially bright. Though I can't decide if the shell being under water makes the image too blurry or not. This is my first time posting and would like to get some helpful feedback!

I used a Canon Rebel XTi with a 75-300 mm lens. No filters.

Very interesting subject! You seem to have got the focus on the face of the turtle alright, and the blurry shell is not really bothersome because it is under water. However, the turtle is fitted in too tightly in the frame.

I forgot to add - you might want to share the settings for an effective feedback. Like, ISO, shutter speed, aperture, etc. And, finally, welcome to the beautiful world of NPN wildlife!

This is a very interesting subject, I agree with Ajit on the need for more space allround.

Welcome, Ben. I absolutely love this subject and your POV, the colors and light. I actually don't mind the tight crop, but assuming this isn't full frame you could always do a repost with more room around the turtle if you want to.

Thanks for the advise everyone. Unfortunately, this is nearly full frame (cropped a very little amount off the top) and I can't really add any room to the photo. But hey, now I know to consider spacing and you can always crop out space but you can't add more that's not there.

Hi Ben,

Welome to NPN and to the Wildlife Gallery in particular. I like this shot - always nice to see a unique angle. The patterning on the carapace is quite beautiful and I don't mind the layer of water on it at all. The crop/framing is a bit tight for my personal taste, but bear in mind this is strictly a personal preference issue and there's no right/wrong on this one.

Cheers...looking forward to seeing more image posts from you (and feel free to jump right in on the commenting too).

Hey Ben,
Welcome aboard. For intimate subjects I don't mind the close crop. Clarity is bang on, so no problems there. Get in there good and tight once and awhile and mix it up...lol
