Oak Leaves

Another image in my series of scanner art. These leaves were scanned in at 1200 dpi which helped considerably with the details. I did place a piece of black foam core on top of the leaves and then weight it down with some office objects so the leaves would lay flat against the glass.

I think what I like most about scanner art is the contrast between the object and the black background. For me, it works. I do want to try some other backgrounds just to see the difference.

I like the richness of this one. The light might be a tad bright for this. I don't have any idea if there's a way to lessen it in scanning, I would guess not. I might try toning the highlights down just a bit in post processing and see what happens.

Many floral subjects work very well on a black BG, this one too. The random layout of leaves makes it more interesting. :wavey:

Thanks for your comments. I like the richness of the colors against the black background, and you're right Chris ... some objects just work better, it's all just trial and error. Barbara, I'll see about toning down the highlights as I can do that in Photoshop and compare the two. Thanks again for taking a look at my scanner art. It's very fun.

This works for me as presented, Barbara. I have never made scanned frames but you all motivate me to try some. A vertical with more leaves at the base and slowly tapering at the top might also make for a good graphical feel - that is not a critique but an alternate possibility.

Good work

You're doing some fine work with the scanner. Check out Harold Feinstein's work in this area for some inspiration. :toast:

This one seems to have more depth, which I really like. The colors look very rich against the black bg. I think this is my favorite so far.

I appreciate your comments so much. I am very happy with this composition and can't wait to do some more work. I have some garlic and shallots that I think might make a nice composition. I just returned from my local camera club meeting where I showed a few of my "scanner art" images. Most folks had not heard about this technique so we had a very good discussion and now some members want to give it a try. For me it's another way to express my artistic creativity and that is what keeps me going. Photography has been my savior and will always be a big part of my life. This process of using a scanner is just another avenue of expression. And Michael, I have checked out Harold Feinstein's work and he is incredible and one that I continue to study. I have found several others who produce exquisite work and an inspiration to me. I'll continue my scan art and post more as I'm able to. Thanks again for all your comments.

The arrangement is really nice, and I like the rich details in the leaves. My, very minor, nit is that I'd like a bit more space on the right between the leaf and the edge...it's my symmetry bug biting.

Thanks Mark. I see what you mean about adding more space to the right side. I appreciate you following my series of scanner art and all your suggestions. It helps me to see what other see that I have overlooked. Thanks again.
