Echo Canyon

During my visit to Zion this fall I was able to get down inside this slot without much water and some nice leaves on the bottom - wished they were a little more colorful. Some apparent halos in the central area on the far wall is just a transition from bright to darker rock. Does look like some halo on the web version, but the original seems fine.

2 exposures for focal blend, f11. 17-40L, 5D II.

A bit sharper than a single at f22, which I took for comparision.

When i was hiking up there, i vowed to get down in that slot, next time...looked pretty cool! I think this works great, Harry--love the leaves! I know some might consider it sacrilege to forego the best glow in a slot, but personally i like this even more cropped 50/50 (a little off the top) Nice!

Hmm, I thought I had done my Zion homework before my November trip but this canyon didn't show up in my research. I'll have to check it out next time because I like what you've captured here. The leaves are a nice touch and certainly help dress up the murky water. The canyon walls are also quite appealing and the glow is a fine accent. I like the composition just fine exactly as posted.

My favorite kind of litter, leaf litter
Really like your framing Harry and the subtle reflection peaking through on the water.
Nice shot

Wow, this is cool!! This is a very unusual look at a slot, with the strong leaves in the foreground and a good perspective. The grays work rather nicely, as well, providing some fine color transitions. Excellent, Harry.

:toast: :toast: :toast: That's for coming up something original from this park. Processing looks great. Best and most unique shot I've seen in a while from Zion. Give me the heads up next time you visit the SW maybe we can meet up.

This has a lot of abstract qualities Harry that I really like. The mix of cool color on the edges at the bottom and the warmer rocks up top are beautiful. The sharp forms of leaves and reflection in the pool of water is intriguing. Definitely original and a beautiful view.

Beautiful color, glow, and texture in the rock walls but the water with the leaves and reflection really make this sing. Fantastic.

Really like this one a lot, Harry. The leaves may not be that colorful, but they have nice, distinctive shapes. I was down in this Canyon myself in early Nov. trying for an image like this, but there were hardly any leaves. Anyway, excellent image. :toast:

Really a wonderful image, Harry. I love looking at your large version. Beautiful light and colors, but that water and those leaves really make this fantastic! Super nice!

Yeah, that pool and leaves is great. No need for anymore color there. I love the comp and the light too.

Thanks for the comments.

Stan - I did take a horizontal comp which included much more of the left wall, not as much of the glow but I thought this was more interesting because I could include more of the leaves. I'm going to go back to that shot and have another look.

Michael - Thanks for the invite! Not sure when I will make it to the SW next - heading to Patagonia in March, using up all of my vacation time :frown: I'll let you know if I'm headed that way. Looks like you're on your way to Yellowsotne and the Tetons - Lots of snow sounds great, hope the peaks reveal themselves.

This is beautiful! I especially like the subtle reflection of the slot in the water and how the water and it's contents lead my eyes so deeply into the image. I really like this as posted, but can also see an alternate comp focused on the water and it's reflection with only a little of the canyon walls showing.

Beauty in every inch of this. I wouldn't crop, without the top it just seems kinda dull.

Dennis - Though it is difficult to tell on the web, the corner sharpness is not as great as it might appear. With a really large print, a photographer might be able to see the difference. I've heard the 16-35 II is sharper, I'm sure otheres on this site can comment better on this. I did use a second exposure to keep the very near very sharp, toward the center at least

Very nice with the oak leaves and pine needles on the water. The only very minor nit may be the bright round leaf in the extreme LLC.

Wonderful shot Harry. For what it's worth a small crop from the bottom up to that single brown leaf on the right seems to strengthen the comp even more by removing that slightly distracting leaf in the lower left corner. Not a big deal though, it's very nice as is to. :toast:
