The color of morning

There are many interpretations to the story of this image that I will let the viewer discover. My goal with this image was find an image that gave a reason to start the day. This was the last day of a very successful wildlife trip to the Everglades and leaving was less than appealing. :~)

I was using the 14-24mm lens vs my normal 24mm PCE. I wanted shallow DOF with interesting light. There were some luminance layers involved in this image over 3 exposures. I wanted to keep plenty of dark to show off the golden sun rays and highlights of whatever the sun is hitting between the sun and flower as well as the plant hosting the flower in the foreground. I wanted a diagonal line connecting the 3 main focal points. Hope you enjoy, comment and critiques always welcome.

I would say that you achieved your goal superbly Geoff. The lit subject makes this for me. Wonderful work in my opinion, and welcome to what I consider the premier FLORAL gallery on the planet.

I like the concept but it seems a little do dark in the dark areas. I think you could of achieved the same affect if you would of focused on just the flower and golden light.

Welcome, Geoff! I like the idea very much and I am grateful for your explanation. I find that the top third is the most interesting to me. The pink flower seems to be an image in and of itself. The sun and lit whatevers at the top really catch my eye and I would love to see the comp with just that. A beautiful place for sure!

Geoff: Welcome to the finest Flora gallery on the planet and thanks for a fine first post here. Excellent lighting and good vision to see the possibilities. A couple of things would make this better for me. The sky really doesn't do much for the image IMO so I would crop from the top to a point about halfway into the sun. I would not crop the sun completely as I think it helps to see the source of the rays but by showing the entire orb you get a real prominent hot spot in a peripheral part of the frame that draws the eye away form the flower and the light on it. I would also crop from the right side to get rid of the intruders there and the partial flower close to the edge. Great to have you aboard and looking forward to more.>=))>

Thanks all. Bill, I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

I completely agree on that rights side flower. I was very close to cloning it out. The only reason it's still there is probably more to do with laziness than artistic decision.... I didn't see it originally when composing as I was on my belly looking at the sun (I don't know why I'm not using live view when making these kinds of shots...old habits).

(correction, this wasn't the belly composition. I was kneeling in this one)

I disagree with splitting the sun (i did think about it), but I felt since the hot spot would still exist it would instead lead the eye off the image. This way I entrap the eye in a circle when it finds the sun and should then use the rays as an escape route, which should guide the eye back down the diagonal line of focal points. That was my thinking anyway.

Excited to be apart of such conscientious artists with great insight. Many thanks.

This is such an interesting and creative composition, Geoff, though it just does not quite come off for me. I think it is the very dark mid ground and the overall high contrast that I can't quite connect with. Even so, the composition is excellent, and I love the way the flower in the fg seems to draw the light to itself.

Hi Geoff :wavey: Sorry i'm late for the comment.. I had to think about it...... This composition has a very unusual play. of light which has great potential, but to me is too complicated.. It's like two scenes put together.. but it's out of the box!! which i think shows your creativity.. i am looking foreward to see more of your work on creative lighting, just try to keep less subjects on the scene
