This is Lighthouse formation found in Palo duro canyon Sate Park of Texas opened in 1934. The canyon is almost 20 miles wide and 120 miles long with a depth of almost 800 feet.
The canyon was formed from water erosion by the Red River (the canyon is deep red). This is often touted as the second largest canyon in North America.
The hike to Lighthouse is demanding but the view of the spectacular formation is the reward.
Located near Amarillo, Texas jsut 20 miles from Canyon, Texas.
Taken last August 5th the canyon was 14 months into severe drought with no rain and temperatures above 100 daily.

You caught some beautiful light here, Rick. I like the way the clear blue sky helps to accentuate the "lighthouse"; one can even see what looks like a tiny sprig growing out of it.

Neat piece of rock there Rick, learned something new about my home state today
There's so much of Texas I'll never see, thanx for showing me this small part of it.
And I'll remember not to go there next month
Well done :wavey:

Another interesting rock formation to go along with Craig's. I had never heard of this canyon in Texas (although being from the east I guess that's not surprising). Sounds like that canyon could provide some good photo opportunities and be an interesting place to see. . .in cooler weather. Nice clear shot with good comp, lighting, and colors.

Looks like a great place to explore. Nice image. I also would like to explore this place, but in much cooler weather.

That is a neat rock formation set off very nicely by the sky and the juniper bushes.

There it is! I've got slides of this buried somewhere. I like the comp, and you corralled the bright light very well.

This is not what I think of when I think of Amarillo. This looks like a very interesting place to explore. Texas is fun in the spring. This is a well-executed portrait of the landscape.

One of the best things about being an NPN member is learning about new places to add to the travel bucket list. What an interesting place this must be. Love the colors you've captured.
