Cape Smokey Cloud Light

I haven't posted in quite a while... no excuse really.

I spent a great week recently with my family exploring Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. 6 days was definitely not nearly enough time to explore this magical island. I can't wait to get back, preferably in the fall as I've no doubt the foliage would be second to none.

I was lucky to have this great location literally right outside my door during my visit, this was one of the better sunsets we witnessed. As always thanks for taking a peek and leaving a comment.

Kurt, great image! I think you caught this one just right. The slow exposure really works well with the water.

Beautiful composition here Kurt. I really like the big bolders and the flow to the left. I would try to lighten the sky a tad here. It seems too dark and might be pushing the saturation a bit too hard on those clouds. Also the horizon looks a bit cocked to much clockwise. Well done. :toast:

Great near/far comp Kurt! Love the light in those clouds, and the rocks have just the right amount of shine. Great work!

A really lovely and likable image, especially the boulders. I agree with Jeremy on the sky.

I really like the comp Kurt but agree you might have pushed the saturation a tad.

Love the glossy bolder foreground here! Great image over all.

In terms of finessing the image, I would note that the horizon is not quite level, I think your pink (in the sky) could be mellowed a little bit and maybe erase that sharpening halo on the right side of the ridge. Having said that, it still looks great as is. But with the refinements would soar IMO.

Wow...Incredible image, and well composed. I agree that the sky could be brightened a tad---just a small suggestion to perhaps spice up a great shot. TFS!

Gorgeous image Kurt taken on my favorite island. As to the pink in the sky, I have seen that many times on Cape Breton especially after sunset event horizon and a few times before sunrise. The skies there can be quite nuclear at times. If you return in autumn, be prepared for Scottish-like weather most of the time especially high winds, rain, but then glorious fleeting light. Autumn color also lags behind Vermont by a few weeks. So where else did you go on the island? I am curious.

Beautiful light to compliment a great composition. I like the color in the foreground rocks and the tide leads my eyes through the scene nicely.

Looks all good to me. Those boulders provide a good anchor or the composition.

Comp and light are really fantastic here. Sky maybe feels a bit dark, but that's personal preference.

Does f/2.8 get the needed DOF here

Well, this explains why Eva loves this place so much! What a beauty, Kurt! Great comp, light, color, and mood. I agree with Jeremy on lightening the sky just a touch to better balance the light. :toast:

Love those foreground rocks, the flow in the water, and all of the colors both in the sea and sky. I agree that the saturation seems pushed a bit.

Thanks for the feedback folks. As for the sky, yes perhaps a tad dark, although this was well after sunset with only the highest of clouds catching the pinks you see here. There is/was a dark band of clouds in the lower atmosphere to the south (the direction this looks) that lost light much earlier and is contributing to the darker appearance. I've noticed that recently when I use save for web in CS5 the image gets an overall boost in saturation that I don't remember noticing or getting before

Eva, no wonder you return to this place year after year, it's magical! We barely scratched the surface and since it was a family trip primarily I didn't get too crazy with the photography. We were on the northeast side of Cape Breton in Ingonish. In fact this was right outside my door, literally. Made it over to Pleasant Bay for a whale watch but no further. I'm sure there's a ton of amazing stuff on the Gulf side.

Wonderful image Kurt. Love those big honkin rocks in the foreground and the sky with the gorgeous pinks. Also the repetitive shoreline that leads you right through the image. Only thing I might consider doing is cloning out the round blue spot in the red clouds in the upper right. Awesome!

Interesting color, motion and blend of each.
Technically I can offer absolutely nothing.
Nice work.

Really like the in your face comp of this one, Kurt. Horizon has a minor tilt to it but other than that this one is great.

Great image Kurt...I like it a lot. The same saturation increase happen to me when I upgraded to CS5. I fixed it by converting to the srgb profile first before saving for web.
