Brittany, France

At risk of being berated for my cookie cutter images in an email this week (but not having the guts to do so on the forum) here's another one ;P

Actually I didn't really like this one which is why I've gotten around to processing it in my second round of Bretagne images but it got some effusive praise from some of the folks on photo.net so I thought I would put it up to the experts here on NPN. Probably needs to be seen in a darker room and in the larger version for better effect.

Canon 5DMkII, 16-35mm, 3.5 minutes.

P.S. that's not a halo on the left but an illusion caused by a band of cloud.

Strong mood in this and a nice balance to the comp. The tops of the rocks look on the left look a bit dark but other than that this is great.

Great interplay between the explosive energy of your sky capture and the dark rocks. The symmetrical composition works well.

I like your well-balanced comp here Kah Kit. I do love long-exposures, and this one has fabulous cloud movement spreading from the focal point at the main stack. The soft glowing highlights reflecting in the water are very nice also, as is the slightly blue b/w toning. I can't really find anything I don't like about it, apart from perhaps the underwater fg is blurry, but I guess that's just the byproduct of the long-exp water movement. I really like this one.

So here is my expert opinion  : An image with high immedate impact and a good (dark) atmosphere. I can see why folks dig this one. Knowing your work (landscapes, people, street) I also feel that this is not your best seascape image, but with a strong portfolio as yours there's a high bar of course. It is probably a bit too centered and symmetrical. That grants easy access to it, but also makes it a bit static. The larger version does it for me however, and in a dark setting, this really works.

Love the mood and impact of this image Kah Kit, especially the streaking clouds and monochrome presentation!

I think the moody, artistic quality here makes it stand out. There is also some nice symmetry going on that keeps the squarely in the frame.

I don't know what's not to like here. I like the mood, and how the cloud streaks pull your eye into the center directly into that central rock pillar. I also like how the water is rendered to reveal the underlying detail on the sea floor. Works for me. But then, I am no expert, just some guy hanging around NPN.

I like the moody atmosphere and ominous feeling I get while viewing it. Definitely have to view the larger version to truly appreciate the detail contained within. I like the symmetry and think the centered comp works very well here. I am feeling like the brighter portions of sky are much brighter relative to the streaking clouds, perhaps too much... Is your best image, no, is it good, definitely!

I'm always inspired by your work Kah Kit and this is no exception. Beautiful tones, lovely composition. The cloud movement adds a nice, dynamic element to the scene.

Curious who would berate your work for being cookie cutter Kah Kit. As I've followed your photography for a few years now it's obvious you have your own unique style and have photographed many locations many have not. In fact I'm pretty sure you are the one who started most of the New Zealand excitement, at least on this forum, and it seems many individuals from the UAE followed suit and joined in the fun some time later. So..yeah, I'd be curious to see the body of work of the person who called your stuff cookie cutter.

Any way, I'm digging this shot. It's almost like two different worlds with the chaos of the clouds above and the calm of the ocean beneath. The comp is strong and has a dark moody feel to it, and it's a new location I've not personally seen photos from. So it's quite original to me, as is a majority of your work. Keep it up.

I would shrug off negative comments personally. If it was constructive from someone who's work you respect or has a good body or work themselves, sure, use it and learn from it. But if it's just someone insulting your photography, it probably means you're doing pretty well. Look at Marc Adamus. Dude had an entire hate blog dedicated to him by some ignorant cry baby with a foul mouth.

I really enjoy the mood of this, Kah Kit. The large version is especially nice, and yes, even better in a dark room. Those clouds and long exposure work great :toast:

I like the softness in the sky and water set against the hard rocks, and I'm a sucker for dark, moody shots! I wish I had your cookie cutter! Large version rocks! :toast:

The mood is superb. I'm thinking the submerged areas could perhaps use a bit more contrast?

The mood and radiating clouds make it a winner for me. The soft FG detracts a bit - doesn't feel intentional - more a by product of the long exposure and water movement I suppose. Maybe an ISO blend to shorten expos. in the FG might have given a different feel, not as dreamy. Water swirls look more intentional and artistic than the blurred bubbles or rocks under the water.

This looks great in the larger version where you can look more deeply into the details within. I like the symmetry too.

Love the motion and light in the darkness Kah Kit. Ethereal and evocative.

Cookie cutter? No way!..... not any of your work. The guy who sent the e-mail is probably just a wack-a-loon (a term coined by George Carlin) and not actually a NPN member or a photographer my guess.

I keep hoping for the day my photography improves enough that someone will berate me... sigh.

There's lots to like here Kah Kit. I especially like how the water and clouds mimic each other, with the strong focal point of the spire between. The streaks in the clouds fit well in that scheme, adding to the power of the image.

Thanks for your comments. That's seaweed not rocks in the foreground. As for the mysterious berating dude, I received another one so it's obviously just some loon who doesn't have the stones to post on the forum. I'll know when I've truly arrived as a photographer - getting my own dedicated hate website!

The streaking clouds and the sea stacks are very strong composition elements here. Together with the dark tones, they convey the mood very well. The blurred foreground is a little bit distracting.

Always like your work, this one is no exception. I like the mood and movement of cloud. The symmetric composition works well. The blurry foreground keeps attracting my attention though. The top of all rocks seem too dark, probably side effect from ps.

I would have to strongly disagree with the person who is contacting you. As I look at your gallery, it's clear you love seascapes, and why not, when you live on an island! Yet, each one is different in it's approach as well as it's quality for the location you choose. Most of us here know your reputation as a top shelf photographer, so I wouldn't worry much.

This one has plenty of power in it's mood and drama. :toast:

Cookie cutter images! Don't take a scrap of notice Kah Kit.....This image is stunning as is most of your wonderful work. People who make comments like this usually think that they are correct when in fact the opposite is the case. My advise is to go on making great images and ignore these morons.

Very striking image that has impact right away. I am not a big fan of long exposures but this one really stands out for me. I like the way the clouds fan out above the central rock formation and my eye keeps circling the image checking things out. Well done.

Brilliant location. Good shutter speed, the movement in the sky is great. The blue tone is growing on me... The slight darkening on the rock line where it meets the sky - not so sure. Is that a processing thing? Depends on how you are making your selection!?
