Ice Capades

Early this year I was travelling in Iceland, scouting for locations for a new tour. I was prepared to see a lot of spectacular landscapes, people had even warned me that I would get hooked, but it still greatly exceeded my expectations. As a result I didn't cover a lot of distance each day - too much to see and photograph! And as a result of that, I stayed much longer than anticipated - which was not too bad by the way.

This was taken at sunrise. I had set my alarm clock very early to check out the weather, and it didn't look very promising - completely overcast. The weather in Iceland changes quickly though, so I decided to give it a try anyway. When I arrived at the beach the clouds already started to move away and the sky opened up a little. Enough for some light and color to come through. Moments like this can disappear quickly, so I had to move fast. I shot three exposures to capture all the brightness levels and later merged them in PS.

Please watch large.

Stunning capture Marsel. The light rays are just an added compliment to the flow of the image. At first I was not sure of the center foreground frozen object looks.
Very special :toast:

Marsel, great capture! I love the contrast between the sharpness of the ice in the foreground and smooth water rushing by. Absolutely beautiful capture overall. I'd like to see just a little more detail from the sand by the ice. I'd love to see more from this trip!

Spectacular image Marsel. I am not sure many people would have seen this image let alone have captured it so well. It is just striking.

Everything about this works for me. The water motion and placement of the ice in the frame are excellent, and the ray of warm light from the rising sun tops it all off nicely.

Wonderful Marsel. So many of these ice beach shots are dark; I'm enjoying the brightness of this one. The wave motion and backdrop compliment nicely.

That's a pretty awesome hunk of "in your face" ice complemented wonderfully by the moving water and the crepuscular rays from the sun. Spectacular image!

This looks like you might have gotten cold and wet, but the result is stunning.

The clarity is remarkable in this, Marsel! Love the comp and the sun with it's rays streaking through the clouds. While I like the flow of water with the wave action, I think I would like to see a version with no waves, just that great black sand beach and that diamond of ice. :toast:

The way the clouds mimic the wave action is a nice touch. Excellent!

Lovely light and textures. I like the overall brightness here as it seems to convey the right mood and enhances viewing.

The foreground ice seems to be floating Marsel! Stunning light with a splash of sunset color but I really like those crisp whites against the black sand beach.

I've never seen anything quite like this. Great light! the forefront frozen iceball
looks like it's coming off the page. What an effect.

Just gorgeous! This beach seems to be one of the most photogenic in Iceland. The clarity of that ice chunk is amazing. Lovely light. Not much I could suggest, pretty perfect. A vertical crop of the center might make an excellent cover photo for a book or mag  Let's hope! On my list to visit someday. Looks like a couple of weeks would be needed to really soke up the atmosphere.

Beautiful image! My only criticism is that it has a bit of an "HDR look" to it on my screen? Great scene and capture though.
