White Sands Blues

This is the shot i wanted to get from White Sands--the sand is so reflective it soaks up the sky colors, and all the dust/haze from the strong winds that day created some nice pastels in the sky. I looked for a good clean look at the dunes, the one spot you see in the distance is a tree. This is probably my second fav of the day's shoot (first post was 3 or 4).
And if your interested (warning, it's a bit scary  ) here's the music video i filmed:

The feeling of emptyness in this image is pretty intense Stan! Beautiful pastels as you mentioned, and the simple comp is very effective, with nice layering leading your eye through the scene. Nice work!

I love how these dunes pick up the blues. Nice color gradient there too. The mountains in the distant right don't bother me, but I imagine I would like it without them more, maximizing the simplicity.

Stan,

I like Joe's description of emptiness - and this certainly exhibits that perception. But this is just sublime. Sublime and pristine. I'll toss in gorgeous and outstanding too just for the record.

I think you could shave off no more than 1/3 of the sky and still have an effective image, but regardless, I love this.

Can I comment on the video? ;-) Honestly, the first I've heard your music and voice. I must say, I love both - great job, got me intrigued to hear more in the near future. The video is well done, although here's my critique. I would loved to have seen more desert/sands/Stan's wanderings... than jellyfish and fancy graphics. I think there's a story to tell with your song/lyrics and I think just fits better with more you and the dunes, less graphics and perhaps a bit more transparency with the aquarium footage.

Sorry, I know this is a photo critique forum and I should set a better example - but if not now, I'd likely not send separate feedback....

What can I say Stan, that hasn't already been said, simply a beautiful and tranquil scene that I am enjoying very much, and that is what it is all about. By the way, really enjoyed your video, beautiful work on both.

A soothing feel to this. Many crop options, I might have gone a little tighter. I find the right mnt intrudes a bit coming in from the side - if it were more central or was the background I think it might work better. The softness and colors are fantastic, and I bet a lot of detail in a larger version or print. I'll check out your video when I am not in a public place  :toast:

Thanks for the feedback!
Lon--thanks for some good suggestions. I have zero presence elsewhere on the web so this is probably the only place id get critique, so i appreciate your input on the video. I wish i had more time resources to do more--as i told them at the VC, im 'a production team of one' (you need a permit if there is more than two of you!)

I really like the "other-worldliness" of this. It's been a long time since I have seen a high key image work this well. The detail and the subtle color are superb. Gotta check out the video.

You are right, the video is scary.

Loved this, loved the video. I'd lose the tree and the other spot, center left (at the horizon). The mountains are OK by me. I would agree with a slight crop from the top.

Beautiful, Stan. Really like the soft pastel tones and the feeling of serentity. Being an abstract sort of person, I'd also really like a version cropped from the right to exclude the mountains. :toast:

This is stunning. I love the pastel colors and the vast solitude you've captured. Puts me in a gentle mood. Also, you have a beautiful voice but I agree with Lon, more dunes/less jellyfish. Nice work.

That soft blue is amazing, Stan. Love the whole palette in this one. You've conveyed the expanse beautifully. :toast:

The video is trippy, Man. You have mad skills all over the map! :toast:

Excellent composition with beautiful light. One of your best in my opinion Stan. Before print I would maybe clone out the two clouds in the upper right hand corner for a cleaner look. Very nice work!

Very cool! Looks like waves or snow even. Do you have any abstract shots from this area? If so, please share.

:toast: One of the nicest images I've seen from this area, Stan. The soft pastels really make this harsh environment seem so tame and inviting in stark contrast to how bad to the bone it can be out there.
The video was great & well done, although, I had subliminal flashbacks to the 60's after watching it....

Love the color of the dunes and the subtle color in them that has been picked up from the sky. I'm on the fence about the mountains on the right, while I like them I'm wondering if you had any other comp options, perhaps a panoramic, which would have allowed you to place them in a different part of the image for more balance. I could see taking a little bit off the sky as well. Will have to check out your video..
