Kansas White-tail

Quivira NWR in central Kansas is home to quite a few white-tailed deer, including many nice bucks. Most of those bucks have beat up racks since the rut is winding down. I found this buck and his doe this morning. His rack is anything but symmetrical, but it is intact, and has 10 points and a tiny little wannabe point. 7D, ISO 400, f/8, 1/125, 500mm braced on car window, slight crop.

Very nice buck. He looks like he has been around for awhile. I like the habitat background.

Nice color in this image. I like the sharpness you have in this one, along with a good pose. The BG sure looks like Kansas. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent capture, Rob. In a sense I would be wishing the out of focus wooden posts were not there, but on the other hand I agree it lends a real sense of Kansas place. I appreciate the quality of light and depth of field control on the buck.

Wouldn't change a thing, very nicely done! Love the setting and the beautiful pose on this impressive subject. As good as it gets Rob. :toast:

Thanks everybody. While it would have been nice to not have the posts, they also lend something to the background and feel "right" to me. On a side note, this buck was standing on the wrong side of the no hunting line. A hunter could have stepped from his car and tagged the buck; a few yards to the left is a no hunting zone, but this buck was in a public hunting zone. The day before, he was just south of here, safely within the no hunting zone :).

What a neck; that must be some strong buck! I quite like this, the proud stance, the natural color scheme. In the field I might have opted for a little less DOF to minimize the effect of the BG tree on the right, or alternatively move a bit to the right to get it out of the frame. The man-made fence poles are a bit obvious and, to me, distracting.

Vincent, I tried moving a bit to the right, but that brought the foreground clutter into the photo, and the clutter looks worse to me than the branches.

Nice shot of a beautiful animal. The surroundings/BG say farmland all over which is the most common habitat for whitetails. Well done.
