Glow Tops

Here is another image from the Grand Canyon from Friday evening. This was the very last light of sunset as it illuminated a band of snow clouds that lit up and highlighted the tops of the buttes and temples. It was like nothing I had seen before and made a nice color contrast. Comments and critiques appreciated. Large version included.

I love the mood here and especially the lit up top of the buttees. Great shot

You captured some wonderful light here, Peter. Those illuminated snow clouds are beautiful and the band of light works very well with the foreground which is in shade.

This is great, Peter. The highlight on the left butte is wonderful, but there's lots more than that to explore in this image. One of the better GC images I think I've seen.

Wow... Certainly a light show your glad you didn't miss. Your last two images have been some of my favorites, perhaps because they are taken at a heavily photographed location, but really (really) stand out. It's incredible how the rich, vibrant sunset light just touches the tops of those buttes, with the deep canyons below still receiving a bit of the glow. Although the bottom looks to be a bit strange in color (too green/blue or cyan), I definitely hesitate to try to point out anything minor like that. Thanks for the large version---puts me right there!

Very nice colors and details. Those snow bands really add extra texture. The buttes obscured by the clouds are excellent. My only nit, and more a curiosity actually, is the abundance of sky. I think there is a powerful image waiting that has less of the highest clouds and a touch more of the canyon bottom.

fabulous conditions, well captured. I wonder about cropping a little off the top (just below the bit of bright sky) and lightening the bottom section just a touch - just a touch mind for the darkness suits it?

Thank you everyone for the suggestions.

Brad, Stuart, I liked that part of the sky because IMO it gives even more depth to the scene. I also liked the lighter blue to give a more cool feeling because although the snow isn't apparent here, it was snowing in the distance and was very cold.

Nathan, I had to brighten up the foreground quite a bit and boost the contrast. I didn't do any saturation adjustments except for whatever the brightness/contrast layers did. The colors should be somewhat accurate if I can recall, as a lot of that green area is shrub.

Peter, very beautiful light and rare conditions. Excellent capture. Feel slightly blueish for my taste.

Thank you Yiming, the original RAW file was actually more blue than this as I tried to warm it up just a bit. I still wanted a lot of cool blue tones, so I didn't try to pull the blues back too much.

This on is sweet - one of my favorites from the images you posted in RMNP. I like the color in the shadowed area as well as the way that you have used the various layers of color as a compositional element.
