High key Phalaenopsis

by Albert Darmo

Nikon D300, 150mm, F/20, 2.5sec, ISO 200. EV +2.7, mirror up, cable release.

This orchid species makes for a perfect high key presentation. There was a lot of work getting the subtle white tones perfectly done. Comments appreciated.

Wow! Awesome composition Albert. I've found Orchids difficult, never got a shot that I liked much but this is very nice.......beautifully captured and processed. :toast:

Albert: Very nicely done! I like how you filled the frame and the flow of the stem. Top notch.>=))>

The whites are perfect! The other colors are very nice too. The white petaled varieties make excellent subjects for high key treatment and I think you've done an excellent job of it.

I've been looking for a good specimen of the white/yellow phalaenopsis. That brings me to my only nit with this image - the flowers look like they're turned sideways.

Beautifully done, Albert ! The play of the coloured centres against the sweep of the petals is handled in a masterly fashion. Oh, and the high key effect isn't bad either !

I admit, I'm having a little trouble with this, Albert. I love the overall comp and concept. But I cannot resolve enough of subject against background. The flower centers are lovely, but to me look strangely isolated. I know this is what high key is all about-- merging subject and background to subjective degree/taste. So, it's maybe just my eyesight is not up to the task, here.

Albert, this is a kind of photo that I like very much and you have realized the work beautifully, both in shot and editing. Only one little neat just for my personal taste: the tonality of the green in the stem is cold and does not make harmony with the other warm colors: more yellow and less blue? Anyway it is a splendid photo.
Take care.

Lovely bright look at these Phalaenopsis, Albert. Great job keeping detail in the white petals.
