From May 2001, a tourist stop along the Icefields Parkway from Lake Louise to Jasper, rides can be purchased onto the toe of the Athbasca Glacier flowing down from the Columbia Icefields. Over the 35 year period I've been going there, it has receded dramatically. Comments and critique welcome.

Nikon Coolpix 950, 20.4 mm, ISO 80 (when sensors were 1MP

Now that's a unique motor vehicle road! Must be quite a popular tourist activity in light of all the traffic on this glacial road. Does look like it would be a great experience to have though. Photographically, I would wish for more view of the mountain tops and maybe a slight crop up from the bottom. Looks pretty good for 1MP!

Great looking road and scenery, John; and those vehicles look like a lot of fun. Looking at the larger version, I can't help but notice that I have use software like Photoshop and Topaz Simplify to produce an effect just like that. Probably would have been cheaper to find a 1 MP camera on Ebay!

You have an interesting mix of ice and bare ground here. The strange vehicle and Wayne's Topaz effect give this an alien look. Is the line on the left a hair on your sensor? I like the lean of the truck a lot, but would prefer to have the top of the image darker.

Thanks for looking and commenting, Carolyne Derstein, Wayne, and RL.

The camera, upon further investigation, was a CoolPix 900, not 950, but it was 1 MP. Interestingly, I paid more for it in 1999-2000 than I payed recently for my K-5 (similar to a D7000). But back then, it was cutting edge technology for digital, I think, at the $1000 price range.

I believe that the colors are probably a form of noise; they appear as soon as the original JPG exposure is increased. (Back then, at least this camera, there was just JPG, no RAW. The camera (which I still have) is sealed; you cannot change lenses or access the sensor. I took several pictures on the glacier before and after the one I posted and none have this line on them: I think it was probably a rod planted in the ice as a marker for the glacier vehicles.

Great comp John, great lines throughout the image. The foreground snow has interesting look about it, almost painterly. My only nit is the mid-ground hill, in the larger version there appears to be some color artifacts. Maybe as a result of trying to open up the shadows too much? It might just be the camera, as you mentioned. Looks like fun!
