I have been trying the combination of flash and sunset light for prairie flowers. Taken at the Sugar Grove Nature Center in central Illinois.

Very nice and a different kind of photo for you. I like this sort of image. Greens from the veg/trees and yellows/reddish from the flowers/sky keep the color palette simple but effective. If I were to do this, I think I'd try to get the front row a little light, too. Then I could compare to see which one I liked best. Was this fill flash?

John - I agree with what Peter says. Very cool technique to balance the dynamic range.

John, it is a nice combination of colors with a good balance between the well lit blooms and the sky. I agree that the lower flowers need some more light, plus the dark area near the right edge is a distraction that could be cropped or needs some more light.

John, I like the idea, but some work as mentioned—and this could all be accomplished in processing—would move this up a notch. Did you have a diffuser on the flash?

Beautiful photo full of emotive atmosphere and pathos. The play of shades and lights is splendid.
Take care.
