Red Fox Vixen Portrait 2

Well, I'm back with one of my foxes from this early-summer. This is obviously the same vixen I posted a couple months ago that was enjoying a short nap away from her kits. This frame is from a short time later when she was in a slightly different position.

I really liked the form created by her pose and of course that gorgeous coat against the deep tones of the mountain backdrop. I couldn't have asked for much better light on this day, either!

If you have time, please view the LARGER version as it shows off the wonderful texture in her coat much better.

Thanks for dropping by!

Very nice John. The techs look spot on. My only nit is that part of the fox is cut off. If you have more on the left side, that would improve this image IMHO.

John, I like it. Great detail, colour, light and framing. I don't mind the missing fox. This puts emphasis on the face. :toast:

You really captured a great look on this fox. To me she's saying: I'm smarter than you think I am. A beautiful coat on her. Looks like it has been styled by a stylist. Beautiful detail and great color palette. That BG really shows her off to great advantage. Definitely a keeper.

John: excellent capture of the facial expression and details of the coat. The creamy background provides a beautiful background for this vixen. It's a wall hanger just as is. Richard

Beautiful portrait John. I like the multi-colored BG showing the skyline. Nice work....on a side note, a friend of mine is taking me to a fox den location....hoping we see a few...I haven't had a chance to photograph foxes in over 4 years now, so seeing this excites me!

Hi John,

I like the lighting and the composition. I do not mind the cut off portion of the fox because the head is the subject and its positioned perfectly like a portrait. The texture of the fox's fur is ideal too..........................Jim

John, this is wonderful. I echo the comments of the others and will add that for me she looks even better with a little less sky. My eye comes to hers, then, immediately. She's a beauty in a fine setting and you captured her character so well.

Hi John,

Lots to like here...solid on so many fronts. And the fox's expression and apparent attitude - that's off the charts.

I'm torn on the clipping of the fox. But, after looking at this image a few times, I don't think quite enough is clipped off to make the effect look intentional and thus to have it "disappear" for many viewers. I think when presenting a portion of an animal in an image (i.e., to cut part of it off) the key question is always balancing the creative power of a good crop vs. the potential of the "oops I clipped it off" effect. In this case, for me tthe strong diagonal flow of the image leads my eye to the lower right corner and the clipping thus becomes too obvious (and thus an issue in itself).

Just my 2 cents worth - but I'm really happy you posted this one - real good food for thought (along, of course, with a great shot).

Cheers...

Brad

John, I agree that the winding pose is one of the strongest elements of this image. Nice texture and pleasing colors too. The intersection of the sky with the tips of the ears is a bit distracting, but otherwise, it's a nice portrait.

Excellent colors and the composition works for me John, I like the curve of his body through the frame and you left enough room at the top for the magazine cover. :toast:
