Twisted*

Seems like everywhere I looked on Baxter Mt. there were dead trees in the way. In my previous posts (See "Spotlight on the Peaks 2" in the Man & Nature Gallery,) I just tried to work around them. Later in the morning, I found that the higher Sun, and these cool old snags worked well together, so I embraced the deadwood instead of trying to work around it.

I shot three vertical images for stitching but only used the left two here. I thought of cropping it even tighter (see my comment below), but I like a little space on the right to show the position of these old trees on the edge of the ridge. Do you agree?

* Title: (I have read that trees growing in the wind on high ridges are more likely too grow in this spiral pattern.)

Canon 24-105mm.; Circ. Pol.
1/20 sec. @ f/16; ISO 100
Two vertical frames stitched in PS CC

Here's the tighter, vertical crop. I find that I like a little space on the right to show the position of these old trees on the edge of the ridge, so I posted the horizontal 4x3 version. Another idea would be a square version, that you can visualize by covering the right side of the horizontal posted image. What do you think?

Wayne,

I prefer the tighter crop of the second image although I certainly like the first. The second puts more emphasis on the tree and it's patterns which I prefer as the subject of the image. Beautiful scene in both and gorgeous color.

Thanks Pat. Looks like were expressing opposite opinions about pictures with pine trees at the same moment in time! (See my comment on your latest post.) Hey, variety is the spice of ... photography.

I really like the second one. Not certain why but the composition just works for me. Perhaps because it really does feel like the dead tree is the subject rather than just in the way.

Well, I like the first one. The cropped version is just too tight for me, particularly on the right. Plus there is all of that beautiful autumn color to enjoy. I guess I like to see these gnarly old stubs place in the larger environment. All these photos, Wayne, are making me homesick. But don't stop.

Dang, it's gotta be hard on a fella havin all those trees in the way of trying to take pretty pictures of the rest of those pretty trees. I remember one time when there was this tree...... No really I haven't seen a tree in well.....I can't remember  I like the second version with slightly more canvas on the right. I don't like the space to the left of the trunk in the original but I do like the space to the right, if that makes any sense :wavey:

Put me down for the first, Wayne. I like the framing better. Beautiful colors and I like the twisty limbs.

I`m for the original Wayne as the second feels to tight. Beautiful colors in the back round and a very nice scene. Well done.

Wayne, love that twisted old tree, I definitely have a fascination for dead wood.I like the original post better because you got more of the dead tree in the composition, and I might also try a square crop. Beautiful color Wayne, we definitely had a beautiful fall season. I do have one more idea I know would solve all our problems, a helicopter and bucket truck  , what do you think. Take care.

I will take the first image because of the better balance to the image Wayne. A good capture of twisted old trees with some nice color on the hills/mountains in the back.

I agree that this view works very well, Wayne. The twisted snags on the left seem to balance nicely with the colors and long view down the right/middle. Definitely a challenging comp. but I think you were very successful. I like the original post best. I see what you're getting at with the square crop, but for some reason the open space beyond the end of the branch feels good. In spending some more time looking, I think the original post does a better job of "putting me there".
