Midway Geyser Abstract
by Chet Dowell
The Midway Geyser Basin offers many different looks and almost endless opportunities for different compositions. This one, with the colored mist rising and the interesting patterns is one of my favorites from my experience there. Your comments are always welcome. Chet

I wonder... what is the source of the color in the mist?
... And since I am asking questions, the other comments have got me wondering:
(1) Thomas suggests a CCW rotation, which would make it slope even more downhill to the left. Is this geyser really on a fairly noticeable slope?
(2) Mark knows why you did not include more at the top of the frame. Anyone care to share the secret?
There's a hillside behind the springs that is covered with new growth pines and standing burned snags from the fires in 1988 and there is a power line. While the mist from the hot springs often obscures the the power poles, the hillside is only okay scenery wise and to include it (at least in my opinion) you have to take a much wider view, which gives up the abstract and makes it much harder to emphasize the interesting colors and textures in the runoff.
This pool is quite flat, if you look at the overhead views of Grand Prismatic Springs, you can see that the runoff goes in all directions. I'd say the in Chet's image the tilted horizon is an illusion that comes from the front edge of the pool and in this view that edge is running away from the photographer at nearly 90 degrees. The real horizon (bottom of the trees) looks level on the right and is completely hidden in the left half of the image.
