I was up in the upper peninsula of Michigan this past weekend, and I met up with fellow NPN photographer Jeff Martyka. We had a good time together hiking, talking and of course capturing images. It was really my first time shooting with another photographer. I usually work alone, but it was really good, and I look forward to meeting up with other fellow photographers in the future. I have lots of good stuff from this trip, and I will be posting more images soon.

This image was a bit serendipitous because I was planning on leaving at 6:00 am, but I overslept and woke up at 6 instead. As I was packing the Subaru, I noticed clouds in the sky, and the good kind of clouds that could produce an amazing sunrise. I decided to stay for the sunrise up at Whitefish point. I was blessed with this special light, but It was -20 and my winded watery eyes were freezing together, all worth it!!

I appreciate any thoughts on this image, and thanks for making some time to stop by and look at the capture.

The colors and the sky are great, Ryan. I also like the ice flows in the foreground and all the ice on the edge of the lake. I do think that some local contrast enhancement in the darker areas (ice) would enhance this lovely sunrise.

Ryan:

Glad to see more of your images. Congratulations for braving the chill for a really nice image with subtle colors.

That small bit of pink glow at the horizon in the distance is a very nice added detail! I second Mark's comment about adding some contrast in the lower part.

A very nice simple but elegant composition, well worth braving the cold weather to capture this scene. When I viewed this image on my laptop and Iphone last night, the colors appeared nice but perhaps a little subdued to me. Looking at it at on the work computer though they seem quite brilliant with some strong and pleasing magenta. Can't be sure which one is more accurate but I am going to assume it's my laptop so my suggestion would be to bump the saturation somewhat and perhaps even out the color and brightness on the left side of the foreground ice sheet just a touch.

Sweet sunrise Ryan. I admire your devotion to venture out with a camera at -20  You were rewarded nicely. Sometimes it's nice to oversleep.

Thanks for the thoughts so far on this image, and here is a re-worked image

Used TK's masks, particularly the shadow dark for the ice, and the make it glow action dialed back at 50% for more punch.

Ryan, subtle changes but I think they add a little more vibrancy to the image. :toast:

Oh sure, stay an extra day and catch an awesome sunrise! :) Looking at this I can feel the cold despite the warm colors. And I can hear the ice shoves crunching out there. It certainly takes me there even though I didn't make it up to that bay.

I think the repost is an improvement in the dark ice areas. Tough to balance between what you saw and the presentation knowing that dark areas and this site don't always get along. I'm betting printing it at a good size will bring out that area much more.

Definitely a great time to have someone else around to shoot with. And quite productive as well. Look forward to shooting again sometime!

Ryan, What a wonderful sunrise you captured here. The colors are just beautiful and your comp works great. I love the textures and detail seen in the larger version. Good you were able to get out and capture this one. Good work with the grad filters too!! Sounds like you had a good trip to the U.P.
Edit: I like the original just fine but the repost does have a little more punch and looks great too.
