My familiar zebra-backed, red-bellied woodpecker friend, 'hanging out' yesterday morning @ 11:19am & clear.
I was in shutter priority mode when I clicked, the small aperture was not my first choice![]()
F/14, 1/800th, ISO 500, 5DM2, 300mm f/2.8 + 2x ext. & natural light.

8 commentsNice pecker portrait Howard. Using f14 certainly didn't hurt you - still a good shutter speed and couldn't ask for better DOF on the bird. Great background too.
Great WP close up, Howard. Not sure what fstop was your first choice, but this looks perfect to me for the subject and bg.
Well done Howard. Excellent detail and the seed in the beak sets the image off nicely. Really cool close-up portrait.

I was close so the camera metered (evaluative) mostly off the large amount of white plumage Scott.
In a perfect world a slightly wider aperture, lower ISO would've been preferable.
Also, using the 2x my lens is just slightly sharper stopped down a bit less. F/14 is pushing it..
But I'm quibbling again
Sweet portrait, Howard. The f/14 worked just fine-you still have anice uniform bg. Good job handling the mid-day light.
One of those funny looking birds - the pose makes me smile! Nicely sharp ! Love it..

This seems like a very typical Red-bellied behavior, leaning out sideways to peer around an edge at a disturbance. Excellent details in the bird with that eye really grabbing my attention.
Excellent depth of field here Howard and a cool look at the eye. The light looks a little harsh but you handled it well. I would run a bit of noise reduction on the background
