Autumn Into Winter

Winter can come early to the Zion high country.  A fresh dusting of snow had fallen the day before this image was taken on 11/11/2015 in the eastern region of Zion, while good autumn color is still to be seen scattered about.

Gotta love when that happens!  Looks like just enough snow to make it beautiful, without making the footing hazardous.

You get a double shot of amazing color in this location, with the red rocks as well as autumn leaves.  Your composition certainly takes advantage of the snow accentuating those amazing colors.  I think it might be nice to explore a 4x5 crop for a less 50/50 split between snow and colors, but eliminating some of the snowy bottom.  Hard to part with any or those lovely curves of rock and snow, however, so that's a tough call.  (Hapy dilemma) :D

Thanks Wayne.  Well ... the footing was a little hazardous.  In fact, I did slip on some ice while making my way to this location.  Luckily the damage was minimal.  The ice was on a large smooth area of sandstone on a very slight downward slope.  I landed simultaneously on my right hand and my rear end.  I have a lot of padding on my rear end (if you know what I mean), so that softened the impact.  But my right wrist is a little sore now, although I doubt that there is any permanent damage.

Snow, fall leaves, red rocks, and a curving wash.  That's quite a combo, Jim.  I also really like the curves in the stone sweeping in from the lower right and the cluster of fallen leaves on the ground under the tree.  I would think that on that fairly smooth stone, it wouldn't take much snow to make it slippery, glad you're not seriously injured.

I had plan to be out in Zion the first week of November, Jim, but they fell through. Your Zion images, especially the one of the leave on the ice, are killing me. This one is also very well composed for the snow, fall foliage, and red rocks.

A beautiful combination of colors in this, offset nicely by the snow, Jim.  Well done.
