Rich had wanted to see a sample of the photos I took for a new book on the unique city squares in the historic district of Savannah. There are 22 such squares, wooded parks if you will, that are occupied by monuments, historic homes and historical businesses. These were an original city design conceived by the originator and founder of Savannah and the Georgia Colony in 1733, General James Edward Oglethorpe. They are unique in character and define the historic district in Savannah, one of the largest in the USA. Thanks to preservation and farsighted citizens, they have been both restored and improved over the years, although a progressive minded city and county government and the local newspaper put forth numerous plans to lessen and destroy them in favor of business and road development. Today the same squares are the backbone of a tourist industry of some 13 million visitors a year who spend an awful large amount of money locally.

I was one of 3 photographers chosen to photograph the squares and surrounding residences and businesses. The picture shown here is the Harper-Fowlkes House on the SE corner of Orleans Square. The first two stories are the original home built in 1842 in a Greek Revival style. The top floor was added in the latter part of that century (1896) along with the Mansard roof. Since 1985, the property was willed to be held in trust to the Society of the Cincinnati in the state of Georgia.  This is an organization of gentlemen who are direct descendants of George Washington’s officers during the Revolution.

Best of luck on your project, Phil! What I find interesting here is the two distinct architectural styles. My only nit is the phone pole. The Autumn color looks nice, here.
