Big Leaf Maple & Friends

Hello Flora!  Ok, I think going back a number of years Bill has encouraged and coaxed me in to posting in Flora!  Well, I saved this image from our Yosemite trip just to make Bill happy.  sad

So it's interesting that this image was really a result of basically a field test I was performing. As some of you may know, this was my very first outing with my new DSLR.  I had done some resolution tests with my lenses before leaving so I knew the best apertures, which lenses were soft on the edges, etc. etc..  Well, I as hanging out with Preston in an area dominated by Big leaf maples and granite boulders the size of houses.  The granite boulder that was covered in the moss was literally the size of my house (a meager 1600sqft.)  This side of the boulder was literall straight vertical and probably extended 10 or more feet over my head.  anyway, there were leaves clinging and lots of pine needles all hanging naturally - but I must confess this leaf was placed.

Anyway, I did this because I thought it would be a good setup to test my lens and take images at all the apertures, which I did. Very shallow depth here, so I thought it was be a good test.

Long story short, I kinda liked how this came out so I decided to process it.  It is a slight crop and a small bit of cloning.  I was surprised, but for this lens, the best choice was at f/22.

Thanks for any comments or critiques?  Too static? Obviously placed?  Oh, I picked a leaf that was still green and not perfect so as not to be too obvious... ;-)

Nikon D800E
Tamron 24-135mm @120mm f/22

Thanks!

Lon: OK, here's the problem with you posting here; now I know you can do it!enlightened Staged or not this is a fine image and I like your thought processes. Love the textures in the moss and there are just enough pine needles to complement the shot. With regard to lens performance, Mike Moats used to routinely shoot at f32 and got gret results. Purists would tut tut regarding diffraction but his work always looked pretty good to me. Of course that was in the days of 720 pixel posting so perhaps the images were just too small. I must admit I have a bias against academics and some theoreticians who don't really work in the real world but stick their noses into mine. Anyway, enough ranting. Very nice image and keep 'em coming. >=))>

PS: Trees and grass are Flora too.sad

Nicely composed, Lon.  The interlaced pine needles prevent it from looking too artificial-you did a very nice job on the arrangement.  I love the moss backdrop-you should have a shot of it without any disturbance-it would make a really cool backdrop to have handy.

Very nice, Lon. I like the arrangment. Looks very natural, and its perfectly exposed with excellent detail. Now that you've posted in Flora, on to Macro & CU!   crying

Thanks for the comments.  Heading out to Yosemite on  Saturday so won't be on NPN for a while.

Bill, I'll see what I can do to post a few more here.  But Scott, no promises on Macro.... not sure I have anything that qualifies! enlightened

Happy New Year everyone!

I think if it were just the leaf, it might be too static.  The needles add enough randomness to carry the shot.

I read it certainly as an artificial composition, Lon, though I also thought the needles might be placed too.  Nothing spoils the image in that respect - a lovely contrast between the lines of the needles and the thick gathering of moss, with the leaf adding its clear outlines as a point of focus.  Like it a lot !!
