Great Egret
by Dennis Plank
I went down to Ridgefield NWR on the 30th and very coincidentally encountered a Great Egret that caught a vole (I first saw this on December 31st 2014 at the same refuge). In this case, I was photographing the Egret and had to change CF cards. When I got back on it, it had just gotten the vole. While the one a year ago caught the vole on top of a dike and took it down to the water to drown/wash it, this Egret caught the vole near the water and then carried it up to the top of the dike where it spent considerable time and effort thoroughly subduing it before swallowing it. Some of the images are very powerful, but also pretty graphic. If I post one of the gorier ones, I'll include a warning.
7D2, Sigma 150-600 Contemporary @ 403mm, beanbag on car window, f/7.1, 1/5000, iso 400, aperture priority, pattern metering, -2/3 EV. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Cropped to 4x5 aspect ratio, full height. In this case our northerly latitude worked in my favor as this was taken just before noon (I think my camera is still on Daylight Savings) on a sunny day and still doesn't look harsh to my eyes.
Your comments and criticisms would really be appreciated-this site doesn't work without them.
Thanks,

6 commentsI like this better as the previous post and I am happy for you that the egrets gave you a second chance. Nice documentation of the life in nature.
Technically well done, especially the exposure of the whites.
