Loving my new camera with the back yard photography.  This migrating Yellow Rumped Warbler, aka: Butter Butt. was enjoying his evening with the local cardinals and sparrows.  Tripod, cropped to 65% of full frame.

Nice pose and excellent detail, Elizabeth.  I like the bg as well, though there seems to be some color banding back there-it might just be the bokeh of the lens.  I am really puzzled by the apparent lack of dof in this image when you were shooting at f/11.  The side of the bird and the perch are in nice crisp focus, but the area behind the eye seems very soft and that just shouldn't be happening at that aperture at 400mm focal length.  Normally, even with 700mm I wouldn't shoot this above f/8 and the entire head would still be in focus, so I'm at a loss for an explanation unless your lens is focusing in front of the subject somehow.  Sometimes they do like to lock onto the perch.  How many autofocus points were you using?  For perched songbirds, I'll usually use just the center point, get the focus, then recompose and shoot.  That way I'm less likely to have the camera lock on where I don't want it to.

By the way, these critters are "Yellow-rumped Warblers".  enlightened

Clean and simple, and shows its naming characteristic well. The angle of the perch is a plus as well.  Nice one!

Dennis, Thank you for the heads up on Rumped vs Tail.  Too much back yard talk and getting away from the correct identities.  I should have looked it up before posting.angry

Mostly, thank you for the suggestions and comments.  I just became serious about photography about a year ago, so I still have a lot to learn.  Therefore, I hope to continue to develop my photography skills with NPN photographers' advise, assistance and encouragement.

Lovely image, Elizabeth! Just beautiful tones throughout and a great pose and clean look from the warbler. I, too, noticed the softness in the face, although there is generally less crisp detail there when compared to the wings, etc. of course. Like Dennis, I'm a little unsure as to the cause, however it's simply lovely as presented so not a deal-breaker by any stretch of the imagination (might be worth some selective sharpening on the cheek though).
