Maligne Icicles

by Roger Kirchen

Seen along the Maligne River in Jasper National Park a few weeks ago. I like the sculpted appearance of these icicles, with the local dusting of snow and the fine cracks in the ice.

Canon 7D, Sigma 150-500 at 500 mm, ISO 100, f/29, 1/6 sec., tripod, PP in LR, PS and NIK.  No crop.

All comments are much appreciated. Thank you for all your comments on my previous photos.

Beautiful work, Roger! Lovely colours and composition, with great interest throughout. Love the layers here.

Although I have seen ice formations similar to these on our local rivers, I have not seen them above such beautifully colored rocks.  Those colors (and the 1/6th second exposure time) make a very fine photograph an excellent one. Love it.

Roger,

This is a great find and even better capture.  The icicles are the main subject of course, but I love that they are framed above and below with such color and detail.  That blue line of ice and the texture of the snow above is wonderful and makes this appear like this whole scene is a "cutaway."

The complimentary warm colors of the water and submerged rock make a lovely balance with the cool tones hanging over head.

The only suggestion I have would be a very slight crop from the bottom - say if you drew a line right underneath your name.  There's a small rock at the bottom middle of the frame that could crop out.  Plus, I don't think you need that much real estate on the bottom.  But that's pretty minor.

Well seen and crafted.

Roger, these icicles are outstanding.  I'm thoroughly enjoying the shapes and blue tones in the ice as well as how they contrast with the colored stoned at the bottom of the stream.

It's unusual to have that much color in an icescape, but the rocks in the water are truly beautiful. The image breaks down into 1/3rd's with the snow thirds adding the least to it. I'm wondering how this would look if that part was greatly reduced?

Vwry nice.  The underwater colored stones add a warming counterpoint to the ice.

Dang, that is neat! Not only the icicles itself, but also the abstract pattern in the water. And then there is that blue band as well. Such a great combination! My only nit would be to burn the highlights in the upper 1/3d a bit.

I really like the way the patterns in the snow and ice mirror the patterns in the water. The colors of the rocks and water are really very sweet against the whiteness of the snow and ice. Very nicely seen. Jasper is an amazing place.

Very cool, Roger.  The shapes of the icicles are downright sensuous  and I like the way the ripples in the water echo the curves in the ice.

Excellent, Roger. I've seen mini ice sculpture images like this before (actually, I've taken a few), but the beautiful colors and nice layers elevate this one to the top of this genre. devil

This is a very nice image. The ice formations are intriguing and love the mix of cool and warm tones. I might be tempted to burn down the layer of snow above the icicles to focus the eye more in the center of the frame.

Hi Roger,

This is some find, and I am immediately attracted to the combination of cool/warm tones. They just work so well together, and really are so vibrant in this image. The details in the icicles are amazing!  A very well seen and captured image, loving it!!!

The layers in this winter scene all work so well with one another, Roger. The icicles themselves are captivating as is that blue band above them. Great texture in the snow BTW.

Very neat image, Roger. Great use of different elements in each layer, each with its own color and texture. Exposure and post-processing are spot on. details in the larger version are superb. devil

Quite the find Roger and other than burning down the snow highlights a tad I wouldn't change a thing. I like how you managed to get quite a bit of detail from the area behind the unique and arty icicles.

Awesome shot. I need to find some of these someday; they make such a cool subject. (Pun not intended.)

Looks like a kind of sandwich. The colour palette, contrasts and fine subject make this a striking image.

The icicles look amazing with the blues throughout.  The colors below top off the image.  Excellent photography.
