White-fronted Goose

This is from 3-4 weeks ago.  I found a place in the Northern Sacramento Valley that was "crawling" with this species, cranes, and tundra swans.  This was just at the end of the spring migration, and I am sure they are all gone by now.  I will be posting some others in the near future from that place.  D800e, Sigma 150-600 S @ 600, 1/2000, f8, ISO 1000, HH.  I am really enjoying the extra reach on this lens as compared to my previous best rig, the 300f4 with 1.4tc.  I have been amazed at the OS system on this lens.  I have been getting a better keeper rate handheld than with a tripod, even when using slow shutter speeds.  And my arms are getting pretty strong from holding this rig!  Comments and criticism are highly valued.

Nice wing position, Jim.  I like the nice clear look at the eye as well.  To my eye, theres a slightly "blocky"  or "smeary"look to the wing and head that often comes from a combination of sharpening and noise reduction.  I never have figured out exactly what circumstances create it, but you might play with it a bit.

Thanks for the comments Dennis.  I know what you are talking about with the blocky or smeary look.  I looked pretty closely at this one and compared it to the untouched raw image, and I am not really seeing it.  This is almost a full frame image with only minimal sharpening or noise reduction.  I will be interested to hear what others think.  Always good to look at this sort of thing, so I appreciate the heads up.
