Bighorn Basin Colors

Since my last 3 posts have been strongly blue/yellow, I thought I'd go for a change of pace colorwise.  It's also fun to be visiting/exploring an area that I haven't been to in over a decade.  Here's a look at some of the colorful erosion formations in Wyoming's Bighorn basin, with the snowcapped Bighorn mountains in the background.  (5D3, 70-200 f2.8 @ 173mm, 1/125, f/16, iso 200, tripod and polarizer)

This looks remarkably similar to Oregon's Painted Hills in my view. Perhaps they have similar geological roots. I usually prefer the more closer composition rather than the environment inclusive one. In this case I would center the mound in the image with the colored hills as supporting it. A layer of the distant blue hills would be the background thus omitting the sky completely. Another words , have the distant mountains be the farthest layer in this layered composition. As things stand now the bottom half is more interesting than the upper half and I feel that could be improved.

I agree with Igor about the similarity to the Painted Hills, Mark. The difference is that I've seen about a 1000 images of the Painted Hills, and I don't recall ever seeing an image from here. I like the mountain backdrop, which also makes this different from the Painted Hills. Your chosen comp and focal length provides a good look at the colorful hills while also capturing the grand landscape. I agree with Igor that other comps without the sky would be worth exploring, but perhaps you did that.

Mark, Quite an impressive view and this really makes me want to visit this area. The suggestions on other comps would make for other nice images from here. This one works with or without the sky for me. I really like the colors in this.

Nice image Mark. I love the contrast between the eroded area and the mountains behind. Good eye for that. I'd also think about cropping a little of the sky. Just not much happening there.

Amazing colors and layers to me, Mark. I especially enjoy the tangible textures of the midground rocks.

Very nicely done, Mark.  I definitely like this with the inclusion of the sky - its cool tones ( and those of the hills ) contrast beautifully with the warm browns of the fg formations.  Can't really think how one might do this differently.
